One thing that really gets me with US news. When they are reporting on a trial (e.g. Zimmerman), they don't just report on what was said in court, they spend hours before and during the trial speculating about what happened and putting forward their own opinions as to guilt. Must of the time they don't refer to an alledged perpertrator, or accused of, they just basically say they did it!
I just sit amazed by it and saying to DW that they wouldn't be allowed to do that here.

And then to prove my point, there was a piece on the BBC about the girls arrested in Peru accused of drug smuggling, whilst speaking to someone about Ibiza and drug culture there and smuggling of drugs into Ibiza, the person being interviewed pointed out "Well, I can't speak about these 2 girls as there is a trail in process" and then just gave general points as to what the issues are around smuggling.

I do find the initial comment of "are Americans being brainwashed in the UK" rather ironic given that you get far more international and particularly US news in the UK than vice versa.
I actually feel Americans are being brainwashed by the news in America!

This would be my feeling.  When in the US I tended to watch BBC World News more than the network news broadcasts.  That and "60 Minutes" and a local news magazine with some pretty sharp interviews on local politics and events.  "All news is local".

Now as for celebrity gossip - I am your go-to-girl.   ;D  I'm still trying to learn the UK celebrities but can frequently be caught perusing People, US magazine, and TMZ.  How's that for class?   ;)

Well a quick rundown: the Beckhams are moving back to London, Jessie J has cut off her hair, the it girl of the moment has prominent eyebrows and hangs out with Rhiana and Rita Ora, Gazza is back on the bottle, and the Ecclestone girls are redesigning their Chelsea homes again.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I continue to follow US news in general and Massachusetts news in particular online.
I like some others have suggested don't come here to discuss news.. I come here more for the desire to connect with folks that have done as I have and left the states to come work/live. To give advice to those newly arrived.(i've been here 14 years) and just have a blether and a moan at times .. :)
This has become over the years a CHILLAX place to be and if news started to get talked about all the time it would become the opposite of that. Least to me.
Thats my 2p ..

All of these apply for me!! Also, much of US news as far as its relationship with the international community tends to appall me more than anything else these days, more often than not...

I wonder if this has even been reported in the US though:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/18/glenn-greenwald-guardian-partner-detained-heathrow

I kind of doubt it & a good example of the far-reaching creepiness of overreaching powers.  :-X

Why yes, yes it has.  CNN, NYT, HuffPo have all covered it.  And I am sure others have as well.

I honestly don't understand when people say the US doesn't cover international news.  Yes, local news broadcasts don't but nightly news on major networks do, as does PBS.  It does have more of an "American" aspect, but that includes South America which doesn't get covered as much here.  I record the CBS news and in the half an hour it runs for they always cover the same major stories that are covered here.

Local news and local papers are dire, but then they are here as well. Look East and The Cambridge News are both dreadful in general.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but... I really don't care about US news.

I don't even know who these people are, so... do i need to worry?

I guess not, but you could say that about any news story that doesn't affect you.

One of the things DW always used to say was that she had no idea who the people were on the magazines when we went shopping. Now 5 years on she goes back to the US and doesn't recognise most of them over there!

I also don't come here to discuss news stories and I pretty much every day:
1. The Times (paper version)
Online:
2. NYT
3. NBCNEWS
4. The Guardian
5. The Telegraph
6. CNN
7. Slate

Weekly:
1. CDC Morbidity and Mortality Rate Weekly (I LOVE THE MMRW)

Occasionally:
1. The Independent

Monthly (ish):
1. The Atlantic
2. The New Yorker
3. New York Magazine
4. Macleans
5. Mother Jones

But I don't think the articles that interest me interest anyone else in particular.  Unless someone on here caught the story about potato hooch in US prisons causing botulism?  In which case, let's dish! If not, here's a hint: Don't let potatoy soups (cream and/or potato) or baked potatoes baked in tin foil sit around.  Botulism. It sucks. Or rather, doesn't given the symptoms.

No you are not going to find Little Debbie snack cakes or the abundance of bathing supplies...the UK has acceptable alternatives.

I saw the bathing supplies post as well and have to disagree. I've found *more* options here within my price range than in the USA. Between Lush, Bodycare, Boots, Superdrug, specialty shops and the regular grocery stores, there are tons of options. I seem to try something new each month!

I like to read the local paper from my hometown online. Otherwise I find the UK news more interesting as I  live here. When in the US I watch the US news !!  Fox News channel is a bit boring though

I agree - I think a lot of people pine for a Bath & Body Works over here. I only became aware of that shop some time after I was already living here, so I don't miss it. I find plenty of bath products variety here too, not that it's a top of my list thing in the overall scheme of things. :)

Neither B&BW, nor Yankee Candle have any appeal to me at all. They just smell like a chemical wash to me, but then I also don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets.

My mother has really bad allergies, so I never had that stuff as a kid.  I can understand why other people miss it though, sort of. ;-)

I guess it is a lack of it all being in one place and not having seasonal varieties. Much like my lack of Peeps.

I think any 24 hour News channel, here or in the US, is pretty boring.  They are repetitive and need to fill the time, so they get talking heads in.

I do like the newspaper round up they do here.
