Just got back to this, been a tad hectic, so in response to the global sim I bought, this link may be helpful;

http://www.talktalkmobile.co.uk/commerce/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?ARTICLE=MAIN.UK.INTERNET.PORTAL.TTMOBILE.STATIC.TTMOBILE.HOME.MBWLD

I think their is a better site, but this shows that the calls become low cost from UK back to US.

So for me, unlocked phones, Virgin sims for calls between us in the UK and the global sim for calling my step-son back in the States.

Well that's the theory anyway :-)

I just bought a new PAYG phone, so just popping in to add my experience! I chose to switch from Virgin to O2-not that I had a horrible experience with Virgin or anything, but the stars just weren't aligning for me to get a new phone with them.

Anyway, I was super impressed with the O2 website and my purchase experience instore- highly recommended!  Not to mention they have an international  "bolt-on" with their PAYG plans so that when you pay a one off charge of 4.99 you get calls to the USA for 5p/min!

And if anyone's looking to get a new mobile, I highly recommend the Sony Ericsson K750i!  It was the hot new thing back in mid-2005 so the price has come down a lot from the stratosphere (I paid 80 quid for it.)  And it has anything you'd ever want or need- triband so it works in the states, 2.0 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, FM radio, MP3 player, Memory Stick cards..the list goes on.  I love it :)

(Can you tell I'm super excited about my new phone? ;))

I just got a Sony Ericsson W300i and I love it! It has all that stuff too, except the camera only does 1megapixel instead of two. I love all the features!

I use the Mobile World service that was linked to above - its done by Carphone Warehouse, and offers a sim card that provides cheap calls to many countries. The US is 5p/min, and calls in the UK are 15p/min - so quite cheap. Just wanted to add in my support for it - it provides a really cheap and convenient way for me to call my family whenever I feel like it! You can find more about it at either the link above or www.mobileworld.co.uk. With a 10 pound topup at purchase, the sim card is free. It seems like other competitors, such as Orange, are starting to offer these global sims as well, but when I purchased it a couple years ago, it was the only one offered. I have been satisfied the entire time.
