Hi,
There's plenty of potential areas to consider living near Tolworth and Richmond is indeed very nice! Kingston is just around the corner, Twickenham as well and collectively, these areas may well prove to be ideal for you.
For your commute over here to Slough, you'll most likely over time use a mixture of back roads and the main A roads depending on traffic levels and time of day etc and if you come across a big traffic jam, accident or other delaying road hazard, you can switch to another route. I've fairly often had to go in the opposite direction to the Weybridge, kingston, Walton and Chessington areas for both work commutes and social requirements etc and I always much prefer the quieter side roads. To help me in recent years, I have GPS software on my phone which also has live traffic updates, so I can put in a destination and know if there's major delays etc whereby it'll automatically re-route. In previous years, it was just a gamble but once a 'number' of rat routes was worked out (which will take you some time) I could relatively quickly switchover to them if I got caught in a delay etc.
Overall, Slough>windsor>old windsor, Wraysbury>virginia waters> chertsey>walton on thames>Esher> that sort of area in which you choose to live will give you a few good 'alternative' routes
Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!
