Houston, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia to Somerset!
« on: September 06, 2013, 11:03:40 AM »
Hi Y'all,

Joined a few days ago...but figured I would do the welcome wagon with a short "hello" and see what's going on.

I moved over to the UK a few weeks ago with my 90+lb German Shepherd dog, Odin. I met my fiance in Florida while on vacation in May, and we just hit it off. There was no question we were meant to be together and everything started to fall into place.

I visited a few times and the next thing I know I'm packing up my house, my dog, and myself into a loaded down SUV with a U-Haul and driving from Houston, Texas to my parents house in my hometown Atlanta as a "Layover" stop before the official move a few weeks later.

The dog and I made it over safe and sound, the next piece will be getting married (next month!) and getting my spousal visa sorted out. Very exciting!

So glad to have found this forum, it has been very helpful with the adjustment in the UK. So far I am loving it here and even more so being with my fiance in his beautiful country.

See y'all around the forum!  ;D

Hi! I lived in Houston from 1996-2009, (and it is still our home base in terms of my husband's employer), so I know that you're making a big move in terms of possible culture shock! And I'm originally from Devon, and used to live in Bristol, so have experienced the differences myself.

Welcome, and if you have any questions, just ask :)

Hey, my husband's family is from Somerset, whereabouts do you live?
On s'envolera du même quai
Les yeux dans les mêmes reflets,
Pour cette vie et celle d'après
Tu seras mon unique projet.

Je t'aimais, je t'aime, et je t'aimerai.

Fruitgum - Yes! Quite a culture shock indeed! I am loving the country-living life so far. I know the cows, sheep, and pigs get old after a while...but there is something so endearing about walking the dog down the road and looking over to see the dairy cows just chilling. I love it!

P.S. I really miss the steak selection from Texas!!

Historyenne - We're near Shepton Mallet. Quant little part of the SouthWest! :) if you need a friend, feel free to reach out! :) We frequent their Tesco's quite often!

Odin is a cool name for a German Shepherd.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

This x1000!!

I'm from Austin and am now living with my husband in Salisbury. I'm sure he'd second me when I say I complain all too much about the lack of steak over here. And BBQ. And TexMex. I could go on. ;)

Anywho, we live about an hour from you. If ever you're looking for friends and/or something to do, we get together with another expat couple every other week or so for dinner and board games. We're always looking to expand the "family!"

Welcome to UKY, and to the UK!

Where in AtL are you from?  My husband, our girls, and I live in Decatur right now, but we are planning our move for two years out [he's a UKC].

Also, wow! That was FAST! I would have done the same thing, though, if my husband was just here on a visit when we met.  As he was on a student visa, we had time to plan a wedding and all that, and when he sorted a job it just happened to be in the US.  It's been nice, but we are definitely ready to get over there.  Especially since our girls are now old enough to explore the world a bit.

Good luck on settling in and I look forward to reading your post on how it's going.  I'd love to live in the country in England. I grew up on a farm here in GA and I know I'd feel more at home in a village.
4 December 2005--Met in ATL, Moved in together

May 2007--Wedding, Part 1 in Pine Mountain, GA;
Sept 2007--Wedding, Part 2 in Scarborough, UK

May ‘10–2nd Child
June 2013--Decided to move to the UK!
July 2013-Jan 2016–family tragedies. Delayed move
April ‘15–3rd Child
2019...planning again
January 2022–applying for visa!
Goal: Get Eldest in UK school by year 9!
Hopefully moving to Malvern June 2022

I feel you on the steak...BBQ...TexMex...steak..and steak? Did I mention steak???

We would love to meet y'all for dinner in Salisbury sometime! Or you guys can come round to our neck of the woods, either way! Let us know a weekend that works and we will make it happen!

Mind you, I've been cooking some southern recipes for my homegrown British fiance...he is certain I'm going to kill him from food alone. Fried chicken...twice baked mashed potatoes...macaroni casserole...etc, etc. I love a man who appreciates home cookin'!

We should do a fajita night, I know some good marinade recipes. God...I miss good Mexican food!

Hey there! I was born and raised on the Northwest side, Marietta in East Cobb. Yes, it was quite fast, but when you know you know! I must admit, I LOVE living in Somerset, it's a fabulous little country with a lot to offer. Ironically, I always lived in a town or city, never in a smaller village. We are loving it. The people are as kind as could be. Always nice to know another fellow Georgian, Wren!

Congrats!  on everything!

I'm back stateside for the time being (SE Georgia in fact), but my guy is in Dorset.  His sister and her family are in Templecombe in Somerset, and we go to Shepton Mallet for the nephew's football games.  It's quite a quaint little town.  I like it there.  Hoping to be back for a few more months come January(ish).

Wishing you the best on your engagement, adjustments, wedding, and all. Somerset is a beautiful place.

Thanks! It's amazing how quickly one can find a dress if they look in the right place. Hooray for that! We are getting married in Antigua in the Caribbean.

Congrats!  on everything!

Small world! We love Shepton Mallet too...their Tesco really loves us! But hey...can't knock a store with Mississippi Mud Pie! Thanks so much for the kind words, and to you as well! :) When you get to town, do let us know and we can shoot for dinner.
