Atlanta To Bury St. Edmunds
« on: September 08, 2013, 10:05:51 PM »
Hi Everyone,

My husband, son  and I just moved to Bury St. Edmonds from Atlanta at the beginning of  August. So far we love it! His job is going well, my son's school has been fantastic helping him acclimate to the UK school system and BSE is great. We do miss our friends terribly though and would love to know if there are any UK Yankee forum readers living here. Anybody live in Bury and would like to get together for a coffee or drink?
Karen

I love Bury St Edmunds; it is so much nicer to go there and go shopping than it is to go into Cambridge.   :)

I don't live there though, but we do go there on weekends sometimes.

Hi! thanks for responding Bookgrl and Wren! I'm still trying to figure out how to post properly here, but for now I'll respond to both of you in one single post.

Bookgrl, Bury St. Edmunds is great! My husband is working in Cambridge and commutes from here which is not ideal, but the cost of living is so high in Cambridge that we decided to push out a little and settled on Bury for the good schools to choose from for my 14 year old and the fact that it is a nice size town and very beautiful.  If you ever plan to come shopping for the weekend, send me a message and maybe we can get together although many weekends we are in Woodbridge where my husband keeps our boat. I would love to get together sometime.

Wren, I love Decatur! I have a small accessories business and used  to sell at the Decatur Arts Festival and the Clairemont school Christmas festival every year, they were always 2 of my best shows.

We ended up here for kind of the same reason you will be coming back, but my husband is actually Spanish. He has been desperate to move back to Europe for about 10 years and we waited a bit while our older son was getting through school and then the economy went sour in Spain and he could not find a job, so he decided to start looking in the UK to at least be on this side of the pond and closer to his Mom. He has rights to live and work here as a EEA citizen, and my son and I have an EEA family permit. We lived 25 years in the US, so I thought it was only fair to give this a try. So far so good although of course nothing is perfect!

This area is quite nice, where in the Uk is your husband from? Have you considered East Anglia?

:) I do the Clairemont school festival with my Gluten-Free bakery, which I plan on starting back up once we arrive [I should be able to work right away, as I will qualify to apply for my ILR with my visa], depending of course on whether where we live will support it.  From what I hear, Gluten free, allergy free, and vegan baked goods are really taking off there like they are here.  I am, at this very moment, baking vegan gluten free cookies for a sample party I'm having tomorrow.

We are leaning heavily toward Malvern, which my husband lived in before he moved, as we would be about 45 minutes from my MIL in Coventry, and about the same to many of our existing friends.  Much closer to others, including my husband's best friend, who lives in Worcester.  I'd love to live in Yorkshire [the hubs is from Driffield and many of his family still live there or in Scarborough], but I think at first we would like to be near the MIL and friends until we get settled into our life in the UK.  I don't think I've ever been east of Northampton in the midlands or London in the South.  Everyone we know lives in the Northeast or West.

How interesting. My British wife and I live in Clarkston, which is just spitting distance from Decatur. We're moving to London in about a year.

I moved to Atlanta in 1972, to start my career as a musician. Atlanta was wide-open back then, just a great place for a young guy to live and have tons of fun and adventure. Those were some wild times.

Atlanta isn't anything like that now. I think it's boring. My wife likes it because she likes being a critical care nurse at Emory, but there's no work for musicians here anymore. I hope London will be better.

Totally.  I play trombone ;) You guys really are close, wow.  I doubt we end up in London [although it's possible if the price is right, told hubs it has to be enough money to have a 2 bed flat, near a park, and to afford laundry service, lol], but in the mean time we should all get together. I didn't know there were any Brits on this side of town we didn't already know! Inbox me! Let's meet at Melton's one friday.
