Could you not get money / debt advice to see how you could improve your finances in other ways and reduce working, if possible? Sounds like it's doing in your mental health in - and maybe hubby's?

Lots of debt and money advice services that are free:

as an example.

Could you volunteer with probation or prisons (you're in forensic psychology, right)? Or consider work as a probation officer, as a stepping stone?

Thanks for that. I have applied for a few probation worker jobs that I've found. Here's to hoping I get called in for an interview. :)

I noticed there's a few jobs with this charity that works in drug and alcohol, as well as criminal justice - thought it might give you some ideas for voluntary sector organisations to look for volunteering / paid work:

I currently live in the UK and at present on vacation in US visiting my Fiance'.
I understand your frustration of finding employment as it is very low and possibly 300 applications to a job and lucky to get interviews these days.... my friend always stated that "Agencies' are your best bet.

Just like paying costs to go to university... you get your degree but there is no job available in the line of work you require, things are going to get much "Tougher" as the Government are going to force many unemployed into voluntary work or loose their welfare therefore many companies may take on the unemployed rather than pay out a wage.

Both my Fiance' and I have been trying to make a decision who is going to move where next year, both sides have advantages and disadvantages but I will admit the UK is not what it was like 10-20 years ago and due to Government actions is going down hill. many expats who left the UK 10-20 years ago and wish to return to the UK in the near future will be in for a shock on how much it has changed and the Welfare support is being stripped from many people.

Try and get a job in

1: HMCTS - her majesty Courts and tribunal service
2: DWP - Department of works and pensions

Wish you luck on finding a job !
