End of a Chapter, Beginning of a New One
« on: September 29, 2013, 06:55:12 PM »
Hello Uk-Yankee members! I am a new member, although I have been reading through posts for nearly a month now, and wanted to introduce myself!

My name is Zoe, and my husband's name is Mike. We're 33 and 34, respectively, and we've been married nine years. We've both been expats for a very long time. I've lived in China, Japan, India and most recently Kenya; we met in Tokyo where we were both working at the time. We've had a LOT of adventures together, but not long after we got to Kenya we decided to embark on our most exciting adventure yet (parenthood!!!). We have two daughters, Ellie and Emma who are 11 months apart and will be 2 and 1 pretty soon.

We've been thinking about relocating for the past year or so, to be closer to my husband's family in the UK where he's from. Contemplation turned to action after the Westgate Mall attack  in Nairobi because we only live about 7 km away from there, and I suppose that made the decision for us to leave...it was a place we frequented and to think it could have been us is a scary thought. Luck have it we're on holiday in the States visiting for my sister's wedding, but really the incident has made us want to move even more and sooner rather than later.

We're still trying to decide where we want to live, but that of course depends on where we can find jobs. My husband is from Newbury and his family is there so of course we want to be close to them. We'd thought about looking in the Greater London area for the sake of jobs and quality of life but after living in large cities for the past decade we're debating whether or not to look in a more suburban/rural area.

Anyway, I can't wait to meet all of you and can't wait to be living in the UK, hopefully within the next year!

Welcome to UK Yankee! Glad to hear you're safe- it must have been scary hearing about the attack at Westgate Mall.

Good luck with figuring out your plans. You'll get loads of help from people on here about visas and everything else.  ;D

Hiya Zoe and welcome. :)

Thank goodness you were in the USA at the time. I can imagine how such a tragic event would spur you to rethink your residence. :(

The forum has tons of great info about the process. If you have any questions, I'm sure they'll be answered quickly and thoroughly.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.
