Best way to post wedding gift (money)?
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:37:06 PM »
I would like to send a wedding gift of money to someone in the States. What is the best way to do this? She doesn't have Paypal (which I really wouldn't want to do anyway). Is there such a thing as an international money order? I don't want her to have to pay any fees.

Any ideas would be most appreciated! :)

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

I recently used TransferWise to transfer money from my UK account to my US account, with no problems.  If you use this link: http://transferwise.com/u/575a8 , it should give you a free transfer, without any extra fees for sending or receiving the money.

The amount received into my US account was spot on with the exchange rate at the time, and it took less than 2 days to go through.  All you'd need is her name and bank details! Easy.peasy.

I used to have cheques drafted in US dollars from my bank to pay my US student loans. The fee to me was nominal and of course there was no fee for them to cash it. You could ask at your bank if they'll do this.

Otherwise, you might want to see if they have a website set up to accept monetary gifts. I have friends that did this, and I have to say it's a little bizarre. I think the point of it is, you can give them cash that will go towards a specific thing they're going to purchase, rather than just a check. One thing was bricks for a patio they want to build. So, I was going to give them 5 bricks? Weird. I get what they were doing and the purpose of the site, but it was still strange.

We did something similar, but it was a honeymoon registry, so rather than getting pans or crystal, people could buy us a meal or a train ticket for our honeymoon. We felt silly asking for household stuff when we'd been living together for years, and this way we got an essentially free honeymoon. We copied the idea from friends who married the year before, and other friends have since copied it from us. It's brilliant!

I'd much rather get something for them to do on their honeymoon, than a pile of bricks!  :P  I had friends who were going to Hawaii for their honeymoon and I had friends who had just been there. He told me about a brunch cruise they went on, so I called (this was pre-internet days!) and booked them two tickets on the cruise.

Thank you all for your ideas. We are going to try our bank to see if they will write a check in USD. :)

I know! I had to call and....talk! It did throw me off a bit when they said, 'Aloha' instead of goodbye. I gibbered like an idiot.  ;D
