This long thread about one common issue (workplace pension) serves to make the point that it is nigh impossible for an ordinary person, perhaps even a highly intelligent university academic, to correctly complete a U.S. tax return if residing abroad.

Readers may like to contribute to the following survey, perhaps as a way of letting off some steam. Dr. von Koppenfels is at the University of Kent Brussels School in International Studies and is the author of academic research about Americans abroad (American immigrants to other countries). She has written a book: Migrants or Expatriates? Americans in Europe. She is now doing research for a new book and is asking for people to participate. There is an opportunity in the survey to tell her about tax preparation problems with which expats are burdened.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/the_US_and_you
I've debated bringing this survey to light on this forum since the preponderance of replies when discussing US tax filing leading to citizens giving back their passport is "doing a US return from abroad is not that complicated". But, I do note that at this time there are 97 pages of questions regarding filing. Someone must find some degree of difficulty in the process.

I've taken the von Koppenfels survey. It was made available mid-December. It is a well presented survey.

Whether you feel US tax reporting is not an issue, and those that talk about difficulties leading to giving a passport back are spouting pure hyperbole and over-reaction; or if you feel there is a problem leading to personal difficulties, this is your chance to express fully your opinions.

I think I'll start a new thread.

Thank you to everyone, as always, for your responses.

I always learn something new from you guys...like about form 8965 - I had no idea about that one, oops!

So I think I can conclude that in addition to my normal 1040, 2555-EZ, and FBAR that I submit, I now have to add forms 8965 and (the optional but just to be safe) form 8833.

How how I miss the good ol' days of being able to use Turbo Tax.
