Where do you get your turkey from for Thanksgiving?
« on: November 18, 2013, 09:52:21 AM »
I thought there was a great big Thanksgiving thread on here but I cannot find it. :(

I see that one can pre-order a turkey for Christmas, but where does you find one for Thanksgiving time?

Also, where do you find apple and pumpkin pies (unless you make them yourself!)

Thank you!!

We get a weekly veg box delivery from Able and Cole - I called them about a month ago to see if they would deliver us a turkey for Thanksgiving (they were already taking orders for Christmas), but they said no. We asked our local butcher and he was more than happy to take the order. We pick it up on Saturday :)

I have also been told that Aldi and Marks & Spencer have turkeys now, if you're looking for frozen instead.

Hope that helps! If you're anywhere near Chester, I'm happy to give you our butcher's info :)

I would just ask the meat person wherever you shop  - or get a turkey breast, which is always available.

I see apple pies everywhere, but they don't compare to the nice ones I make. Pumpkin? Not a chance unless you make your own.

Aldi had Libby's canned pumpkin as one of their "American food" items a few months back, and I stocked up. I think some have found it at Tesco. Otherwise, find a pumpkin, and make puree, which freezes nicely for pies or pumpkin bread (that's what I did last year).

I get a turkey crown from Costco for Thanksgiving.  I know that's not an option for everyone though.

NYC - I'm in West Yorks, but thanks anyway! :)

Thanks all for the info. I guess I will just hoof it to my butcher and some stores and see what's what. I do prefer the whole bird. :)

We usually get our turkey from the butcher but I noticed this year that on their website, Waitrose has some but not all turkeys available for Thanksgiving.

Morrisons had frozen turkeys last week.  I live in Dorset.
Hope you find what you are looking for and have a nice pumpkon pie recipe!

Plenty of places have frozen turkeys - Morrisons and Lidl I've noticed in the last week. If you want fresh you can order. First year DW was here was the only time (beftore this year) that we spent Thanksgiving in UK and she ordered one from our local butcher because we didn't know there'd be frozen ones available - it was £30!

I'm not sure what it says about me to admit that I will be ecstatic if our bird is only £30!!  ...I will not admit what I spent on a bird last year.... :P

Also - OP, you may want to check Ocado's American Thanksgiving store, if you haven't already. They have Libby's pie filling for sure, and also some turkeys: http://www.ocado.com/webshop/getSeasonalCategories.do?tags=|54492&Abutton=2&ad=29103|1074185|29310|1064482  (if that link doesn't work, go to ocado.com and type "American" in the search box - you should then get a link to their American store, which has a separate page for Thanksgiving).

Good luck! I love Thanksgiving. It's my favorite holiday!!!

My thoughts exactly!!  I think my turkey crown last year was around £30 but it was a crown - not a whole bird.

I definitely had turkey sticker shock when I moved here.

LOL. I just meant that I am a snob....Paid a lot of money for my farm turkey in the greater NYC area last year. By far the most expensive turkey I have ever eaten, but also the most delicious  ;D

Whole Foods sell pumpkin pies.  They're stupidly expensive, but they do sell them.

Since it was always just DH and I, I'd get a frozen turkey crown from M&S. I would make gravy using a nice fresh chicken broth that I'd splurge on a bit (rather than the stuff in the can or cubes). I never had a pie pan when I was there, so I didn't make pies, but apple pie is super easy to make. I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin pie, so I'd make some other form of pumpkin dessert, like cake, cookies, or bread!

We always get our turkey (whole and frozen) from Waitrose. It's the only free range one we could find a that time of the year, if that kind of thing matters to you.
