Things are moving forward rapidly, now!

[NOTE: Had I known you cannot edit your posts after a while I would have formatted my first post and its title differently.]

Sold my car, finally, to a guy in Australia of all places! Apparently they're going crazy for old American boats over there. I told him that it would be cool if, in our worldly adventures to come soon, we could visit the Bean Machine in his new habitat:

Quote
You're both welcome to stay for a while here, we have a nice house near the beach(no kids) (Mount Martha, Victoria). I can pick you up at the airport, show you around too. It's no trouble, don't come in April/May this year- we're away. I'm a retired Police Officer myself and I love the cars.
We stopped off at Dubai last year, did Italy, lashed out and stayed at the Atlantis Hotel, what a hotel, google it, you'll be amazed.

Thanks again, I've been (Bean) so lucky with your help.   Little joke.
He immediately became one of the most awesome people in my book. He's taken care of all the shipping arrangements (a tow company from San Francisco came up to get it, then they take it back there, load it on a boat, and off to Australia) and even paid to get it fixed up enough to run smoothly. Note to all trying to sell your car: eBay works wonders, and don't limit shipping to only the US.

With that we've moved on to visa processing and cat arranging.

I filled out the visa application last week (didn't send it yet), and my wife has mailed her birth certificate for proof of age, passport info, filled out sponsor form, three paystubs, and three utility bills for proof of address. She may have sent more, but I guess I'll see when it arrives (hopefully this week). Once it arrives the plan is to send in the visa application, get my biometrics done (right down the street woo!), and FedEx it off to New York!

As for the cats, we asked three different places, two of them using the IPATA search page:

Atwood's Pet Transport (Jan 2013 site) - $2,280.51 - Nice guy, two days to respond to initial eMail, and I've yet to hear from him regarding my second and third eMail a week later.
VIP Pet Transport - $3,671 - The lady we talked to knew her stuff, was very kind, replied in a timely manner, and even offered to share where to get kennels for cheap
Dog Gone Taxi - $2,208 + £436 DEFRA fees paid at pickup - These guys were my favorite and we will most likely go with them. I filled out the form online and within a few hours I had an eMail in my inbox with everything outlined nicely:

Quote
$230-#2 kennels with cups-estimated 40x26x30, 36x25x27 sizes
$425-Final vet visit and USDA endorsement both pets
$883-Airfreight from Seattle to Glasgow
$250-Delivery and Check-in Fee for Seattle departure
$420-Our agency/ arrangement fee
$2,208  TOTAL

Does not include estimated $436 GBP DEFRA fees - paid at pickup
Oh! For those going through pet stuff right now, Glasgow just opened up a pet reception center a few weeks ago. Before that they had to be shipped to Heathrow in London and flown up to Scotland.

So, current plan of events are as follows:
•Apply for visa
•Once visa is approved, book a flight
•Book pet transport
•Finish packing, measure boxes, get a proper quote on shipping

The current target move date is mid-May (before plane tickets skyrocket for the summer)

All in all: Excited! It still hasn't fully hit me yet, and I'm curious when it'll happen to me.

Are you all up-to-date with the new visa requirements, which were introduced in July 2012? From what you've said regarding the documents that your wife has sent you, it doesn't sound like you are, because you won't qualify for the visa with just those documents.

You need to meet the new financial requirement, sending the specific documents that are required by UKBA, you must also send the required accommodation documents, as well as your relationship evidence, and the other required documents.

I filled out the visa application last week (didn't send it yet), and my wife has mailed her birth certificate for proof of age, passport info, filled out sponsor form,

What sponsor form? There is no sponsor form that she needs to fill out (it's not required for a spousal visa). She just needs to write a sponsor's letter of confirmation for the visa (this is mandatory - the visa will be refused without it).

You also need to print and fill out Appendix 2, which asks about your relationship, which financial requirement category you are applying under, and your accommodation in the UK. It's the second link on this page: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-uk-visa-for-family-settlement-form-vaf4a

Quote
three paystubs, and three utility bills for proof of address. She may have sent more, but I guess I'll see when it arrives (hopefully this week).

She needs to have sent more because that's not nearly enough - the visa will be refused with only that.

The documents required for the visa are very specific, especially the financial requirements.

What financial category are you applying under? The financial requirement categories are listed and detailed in this document: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/chapter-8-appendix-fm-family-members-immigration-directorate-instructions

If you are applying based on your wife's income, then she must be earning at least £18,600 in the UK in order for you to qualify for the visa. And she MUST send at least 6 months of payslips along with 6 months of bank statements showing the payslips being deposited. She must also send a letter from her employer, and it is also advised for her to send her job contract and her most recent P60.

There are 2 employment categories she can meet:

Category A: your wife has been earning at least £18,600 per year in the UK for 6 months or more - as part of the documents, she must send 6 consecutive payslips, with a gross salary of £1,550 or more.

Category B: your wife has a variable salary, or has been earning £18,600 for less than 6 months, in which case she must also have earned £18,600 in the 12 months before applying and must include 12 months of bank statements as well as her bank statements and employment details.

If she cannot meet either of those Categories, you/she can make up the difference with savings (Category C), but the first £16,000 of savings do not count and then you need 2.5 times the difference between her salary and £18,600 (so, say she earns £15,000, you need £25,000 in savings in order to qualify for the visa). But you/she must have held those savings in full for at least 6 months before you can apply for the visa.

Alternatively, the £18,600 financial requirement can be met using just savings (you need £62,500 in savings), or through non-employment income (Category D), such as property rental, stocks and shares etc., Pension income (Category E) or the UK citizen's self-employment (Categories E and F)

For suitable accommodation, utility bills are not enough. Your wife MUST send:

If she owns:
- evidence of homeownership (land registry document) and mortgage statements

or if she rents:
- her original tenancy agreement and a letter from her landlord giving you permission to live there too.

Quote
Once it arrives the plan is to send in the visa application, get my biometrics done (right down the street woo!), and FedEx it off to New York!

You can't send the application to New York, because spousal visas are no longer processed in New York, and haven't been for a year now.

You must send the application to Sheffield, UK for processing, and you need to include return packaging and an international waybill for return of your documents.

Quote
The current target move date is mid-March (before plane tickets skyrocket for the summer)

Mid-March is only a couple of weeks away - you're not going to get your visa by then. I would allow at least a month to get your visa.

First you need to get all the documents from your wife - the required documents I mentioned above - if she hasn't sent the right ones she will need to send more.

The you need to submit the application online, pay for the visa and book a biometrics appointment.

Once you have attended biometrics, you need to send the application to Sheffield within 14 days.

Then I would allow anywhere from 1-4 weeks for processing of the visa after that.

After that, you need to wait for the visa to arrive, check it for errors, then book your
flights. I would guess you might be able to move by mid-April at the earliest.

Yeah, I meant mid-May. I've been mixing up those months for a while now haha!

It's interesting that you point out these documents, we've scoured the site for all the information we could find on exactly what we need, and these were never listed as forms required. It'd be nice if they said: "You need this, this, this, this, and this form." Bah!

What we did was fill out the online visa application form that the gov.uk site links to.  She then filled out the sponsorship form that it told us to, which has a list of required documents to include, which didn't even mention the Financial Requirement Form that you linked to.

You must send the application to Sheffield, UK for processing
Interesting; everything I read said NY. I'm assuming they tell you to send it to Sheffield once the application is filled out?

Here you can find the guide to supporting docs.

Here is the financial requirement and housing requirement.

The website is tricky to navigate now as they just changed it drastically but both those links are from the page you linked to (see section 5 - Documents you need to provide).

Ok! I think we have everything together now.

What she has collected:
•Six months of paystubs [Under Category A]
•Six months of officially printed bank statements
•Utility bills for proof of residence
•Letter from landlord saying it’s ok for me to live there
•Tenancy agreement from landlord
•Letter from employer
•Passport info [Photocopied]
•Birth certificate
•Proof of our relationship [Lovey-dovey cards and marriage certificate]
•Proof we’ve met [Pictures of us together and passport stamps visiting here]
•A letter describing our relationship and consent to sponsor me
Sponsorship form
Financial Requirement Form

What I have collected:
•Passport
•Two passport photos taken within the last month (cut to 35x45mm)
•Proof of relationship [Silly little notes and cards]

To get:
•Biometrics

Have we left anything out? I mean, besides the online visa application (already filled out and waiting for all the stuff above to arrive before submitting and paying). I did a read through of the guide to supporting documents (thank you TravelingFrog), but I wanted to make sure you guys hadn't caught anything critical. Also Form VAF4A seems to be the exact same questions as the online form; do we really need to fill this out if we're submitting the online form as well as printing it out?

Last note here:
All we've seen is the address for the NY office; where does it say it needs to be sent to Sheffield? (And what's the address there?)

Thanks again for your help, guys. This would have been a much more stressful process without you, and I hope this thread will serve as help to those in the future as well!

Again, you don't need a sponsorship form. It clearly states on page 4 of the guide that a sponsor form is only needed for adult dependent relatives.

Have we left anything out?

That looks pretty good. But as I said above, utility bills are not required for proof of residence, so you can take those out.

She also DOES NOT need to fill out a sponsorship undertaking form. It does not apply to your visa and including it is pointless.

Also, just check to make sure that all the required details are on things like the employer letter (it has to state specific things about the salary, length and type of employment etc.).

Also Form VAF4A seems to be the exact same questions as the online form; do we really need to fill this out if we're submitting the online form as well as printing it out?

No, you don't. VAF4a is the paper version of the online application and is it not accepted in the US. You are only allowed to fill out VAF4a if your country does not offer the online application.

Last note here:

The address seems to have disappeared from the new website, but from the old UKBA website:

Settlement applications

If you are applying for settlement you must send your application to our visa processing office in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Once we have made a decision on your application, your passport and supporting documents will be sent back to you.

You must send your visa application to:

UK Visas and Immigration,
International Operations and Visa,
6 Millsands,
Sheffield,
S3 8NH,
United Kingdom

Oh! For those going through pet stuff right now, Glasgow just opened up a pet reception center a few weeks ago. Before that they had to be shipped to Heathrow in London and flown up to Scotland.

Are you sure Glasgow has an ARC? When we moved over in Sept. last year, we flew into Edinburgh. Glasgow wasn't an option then. When we moved over here in 2011 (yes we've moved here twice), we flew into Manchester as that was the closest to Glasgow.

Positive.

It literally opened up about a month ago and just now made it on the list of acceptable places (read: someone in the government got off their ass and wrote it in finally).

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet (sorry if I'm repeating) make sure your wife's bank statements are dated within 28 days of your visa submission. This is sometimes forgotten by others and seems silly, but it required. Hope your visa process goes smoothly :)

Papers received!

Application paid for! ($1,447 btw)

Biometrics done today!

Package sent off! ($125 FedEx, account number on return slip so I'll get billed when it gets sent back) (I had the option of $118 for seven days or $125 for two)

Just to confirm what everyone was saying: when they finished taking my biometrics they handed me a paper with info and she pointed out to send it to the Sheffield office listed.

Now to wait the requisite time. I'll report back the first word I get!
