I recently bought a car in the UK, which has a manual transmission (as do most). I learned to drive at the age of 17 on a manual Honda Civic. In the US, I am not aware of any state that issues separate licenses for automatic or manual transmissions. Today, I got an email from Admiral that they must cancel my policy because they can't "cover my license type." Of course I called them (8p/min) to find out why I'd get an email saying that when they advertise that they cover American drivers. The answer would have made me laugh if it didn't completely turn me upside down. They said my license is for an automatic transmission vehicle only. I was like, "What!?!?! Of course it's not. There is no such thing in New Jersey!" They said, "But the word "auto" is on your license! I'm sure you get the picture now! I tried explaining for 20 minutes (8p/min) that "auto" stood for "automobile," but all I got was "yeah, I understand why you're upset." But, do you REALLY? Did anyone check if NJ has two different non-commercial car licenses? It seems they just decided what "auto" meant and are sticking to it! Has anyone else from NJ experienced this? I don't know if other states print the word "auto" on their licenses or not, so maybe, if so, has anyone run into this preposterous scenario?
