The elusive pickle found?
« on: January 11, 2014, 10:22:17 PM »
My partner and I were at ASDA today and I made my usual rounds looking for pickles, reading the ingredients on jar after jar, and still disappointed to find no substitute for our beloved American pickles.

Later though, something caught my eye.

In the refrigerated section there was a Polish section. I found some pickles that were in a baggie. The ingredients don't contain vinegar or sugar, and instead has brine, water, etc. When we got home I opened them up and the smell instantly had me thinking I hit the jackpot. They're crunchy just like they should be and they taste pretty good. There is a slight difference in the taste but it's better than nothing and will hold me over until my next trip to the states.

That's what it looks like, I hope this helps those of you looking for some!

If you want real dill pickles, go to M&S, and look for them.  I can't remember the brand off the top of my head (though someone on the forum has mentioned them before).  You'll know them when you see them, though.  It will be as though a divine light is shining forth from the jar.  Which will excite you enough to make you oblivious to forking over £6 for pickles.   But it will be so, so worth it!

I haven't looked for them yet (haven't had a craving yet), but how easy are bread & butter pickles to find? Or any sweet pickles? I absolutely detest dill.

I've yet to see bread and butter pickles or anything remotely similar. A few months back Aldi had 'American style' pickles during one of their theme weeks. They were sliced, not whole, and somewhat sweeter than the typical stuff on the shelf. We bought a few jars as they were cheap and DH (the Brit in the family) liked them.

I miss 'salad cubes' for making chicken salad. Regular pickles are not sweet enough and a pain in the patoot to cut into tiny cubes. My favorite US brand is Mt. Olive (because I'm originally from NC). Aside from my grandmother's homemade B&B pickles, nothing comes close to the taste.

Tesco had some that were listed as "sweet" on the label, but I didn't buy any. Might at some point if I get a real pickle craving.

Mrs Elswood's Sweet Cucumber Sandwich Slices are pretty close to bread & butter pickles, or at least close enough for me. I also found some bread & butter pickles once at Home Bargains. Most pickles here have some sugar in them (hence why so many people complain about finding sour dills) - you just have to try & see which ones you like best. Plus you can always add more sugar yourself to the vinegar/brine. I was never a fan of the dill pickles so many people seem to miss over here - so I'm good for pickles here in the UK. :)

My husband is a market trader and brought me these home from the Brecon market. I LOVE them. There is a little sugar in them, but they aren't sweet like pickles here are. He based them on recipes from the States. They definitely have kick though with some chilli peppers in them, so be prepared for that. The balance with the dill and the crispiness is lovely. These are really yummy!
