Dependents without SSN
« on: January 14, 2014, 05:01:41 PM »
I've not filed my taxes in years because I've not worked in the UK so it didn't seem worth the faff. I'm still not working but as I have to file a FBAR this year I thought I might as well file my taxes as well. The concern I have is my son, who is nearly 3, but whose birth we still haven't registered.

Do I have to list him as a dependent? Can I just leave that blank? I assume no, but if I could that would be much easier :)

Since your son was born to a USC parent, he is a USC and therefore needs a US Social Security Number in order to be included on a tax return.

You are not required to include him if you don't want to.

I do not know if there are any credits available (refunds) for 2013 for dependent children. Perhaps someone who is aware will comment.
