It seems I might be preggers!
« on: February 08, 2014, 09:56:17 PM »
So, I've just taken 2 pregnancy tests, and both came back positive. I've never been pregnant before, so I really don't know what to do next. I'm going to take a urine sample into the surgery to verify the results, but what, if anything, should I do next? (besides celebrate of course) I do have some pre-natal vitamins already.

I should also note that I'm overweight and I'm concerned about controlling my health and weight while pregnant. Is it possible that NHS will refer me to a nutritionist to help me with this? Or should I seek one out on my own? We do have BUPA, but I'm not even sure how to use it.

Some advice would be very helpful.  :)

Woo hoo!  Congratulations.

Give your GP a call on Monday and they'll tell you how it works in your area (every catchment area seems to be different).  Mine never verified pregnancy, just referred me to the midwife who sent me a text with an appointment for when I was 8 weeks.

I also have Bupa and have no idea what the benefit would be to use it.  I plan to ask at my next appointment if there us any advantage to using private insurance.

Enjoy your pregnancy!

I went in to see my GP and she said that pregnancy tests are good enough for them so they don't verify the pregnancy. She passed me over to the midwife at the practice and also to the consultants because she thought I would be a high risk pregnancy. I was underweight when I fell pregnant and they didn't sent me to a nutritionist, just sent me to consultant doctors at the hospital, so if you want to see someone about nutrition I would recommend setting that up on your own.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!  [smiley=balloon.gif] ;D

On the weight side of things, Slimming World has an approved plan for pregnancy you may want to look into.
August 2008 - Tier 4 - Student Visa
February 2010 - Tier 1 - PSW
January 2012 - FLR(M)
June 2014 - ILR (finally!)

Congratulations!

There are lots of books out there about eating healthily while pregnant. I have to say though, my friend gave me one and I had to stop reading it because I was afraid I was going to give myself an eating disorder.  :-\\\\ I believe the guideline when you're pregnant is that you only need to eat an additional 300 calories per day (not the whole eating for two thing). This can be a cup of milk and a little treat if that helps with the cravings. I started out overweight with both of my pregnancies and managed to keep my weight gain to between 20-25lbs. My doctor and I were pretty happy with that. 95% of that was gone once the baby was born (and I'm hoping the same goes for this second one!) You're GOING to gain weight, no matter how you try what with the extra fluids and the weight of the baby. Just try to move as much as you can during the day. Even if you feel crappy, stand up and walk around a bit. You'll feel better than if you spend the whole day sitting or laying down.

Yeah, they don't verify it here.  In my area, less than a year ago, you go to the GP.  Tget weighyou and take your blood pressure; they give you a book to fill out and some magazines with 30 million ads for stuff like Ovaltine (Be sure to drink your Ovaltine!) and then at week 8 you see the midwife.
The GP didn't want me to come in until week 5 to get the stuff.

No one verified I was pregnant until the 12 week scan.

Out of curiosity, all of you saying that the GP didn't verify your pregnancy until later, are you in England? Would Scotland perhaps do things differently? When I called the my GP this past Friday the receptionist just said I could come in and get a specimen cup and then bring it back. I mentioned that I wanted to verify a pregnancy (at least I think I did), and the lady didn't seem to think it was abnormal to do the urine test to confirm it.

I guess I need to adjust to how hands off it seems to be here when it comes to a pregnancy. It seems in the US, that my friends had a lot more interaction with their doctors throughout the entire pregnancy.

Congrats!!!

Yes, it is VERY hands-off compared to the States. Much more of a normal state of affairs than a 'medical issue'. In fact, my midwife never saw me at all between my 24th-36th weeks!

Where I am, I got nothing until an appt with the midwife at 10 weeks. GP's office was not bothered about verifying, they said the HPTs are just as good as what they'd do. I am overweight as well as being the dreaded 'advanced maternal age' (41) - all they did was refer me to the consultant in case problems arose, but other than my initial appointment, my midwives never weighed me my whole pregnancy - not once!! I was basically told to 'enjoy being pregnant and call if you need anything'!

BTW, I am covered under my DH's BUPA through his work, and our policy specifically excludes any maternity care. Might want to check that. I was happy enough with my NHS care that I don't think it would have been worth it to pay for private care, but I understand not all trusts are the same here - hope you are in a good area.

I also found the girls on the Mumsnet boards really helpful with all sorts of pregnancy and labor and delivery questions.

Here's to a happy, healthy pregnancy!!

I knew I was pregnant very early on and my OB (I'm in the US) didn't want to see me until I would have missed 2 periods. I didn't have my first scan to date the pregnancy until at least 8 weeks. I never did a test in the office or anything, I guess they trusted the ones I did at home.

I suspect they'll actually just use a regular pregnancy test to confirm themselves!  :)

Congrats!!

While the care is more hands-off here, I have found it to be very good.  All my questions and concerns are answered and I feel well taken care of.

Congrats!! :)

As many others have experienced, I never had my pregnancy confirmed or verified by the GP's office.
I knew early on that I was pregnant. They had me see a GP first to check my health/fill out paperwork and schedule a midwife appointment for me.

I really enjoyed the system they have set up here! It is indeed very hands off.. but if there are any issues they really do a great job at monitoring things closely! (At least in my case.)

For BUPA, as far as I'm aware your GP would have to refer you to a specialist in order to use it.. But quite honestly, there is enough information on the internet about healthy eating while pregnant. I ordered a few books that I never even used.. Just googled everything/asked midwife about things I had questions about.

Hope your pregnancy goes smoothly! Again, Congrats!!

My friend is a GP in Scotland and when I told her she said they didn't test.

Ahh..well, if they don't test, how do you know when the GP actually wants you to come in for the first check-up?

Do you know the date of your last period? That's how they'll figure how far along you are.
You can google 'pregnancy calculator' and put your last period and cycle length in, and you'll get # of weeks pregnant and due dates.
If you are really unsure or have absolutely no idea when your last period started, they can do an ultrasound to date the pregnancy.
