New, with no clue
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:18:15 PM »
Hey everyone, names April. So here it is, I am moving from Arkansas, US to Dundee, UK. I haven't actually started my passport/ visa process. My plan is this:
I wish to be in Dundee by July, 2014 give or take a few months. Seeing as I would need to work while I am there to survive,  it leaves me with a ton of questions. My two qualifications I have are ,masseuse and my CNA ( certified nursing assistant). Seeing as those are not to terribly impressive, I worry that I cannot get a visa, let alone which visa. Now the other thing, I am a model and do have experience. My concerns on that would be: Agencies- I would think they recruited their models from other agencies here in the US, and simply do not take a one person inquiry. Also I don't think I would get paid (starting out), so not sure how that would work. I suppose I can contact an agency in the UK and ask.
I am concerned with finding the correct job, to survive in Dundee.
That's not to much to ask!

Thanks for reading guys, sorry if my post is a little "all over the place" but surely  most of you have been in my shoes.
 :D
Cheers,
April

You can't come to the UK without a visa and your chances of finding a sponsor for a Tier 2 work visa are pretty close to zero.  First you need to find an employer to sponsor you and then you can apply for a visa.  Your qualifications aren't on the shortage occupation list which means that an employer must prove there is no one in the UK or EU who can fill the job.   That's pretty unlikely.

Hi April, welcome to the forum :).

Unfortunately, I think you may find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to qualify for a visa that will allow you to move to the UK. Unless you are married to a UK citizen, or you will be studying at a university in the UK on a student visa, your only real option will be a sponsored work visa. Unfortunately, there is no way to move to a new country just because you want to live there, you have to qualify for a visa to move there... And that's the tricky part.

In order to qualify for a work visa, the job either has to be in shortage in the UK and the job title listed on the Skills Shortage List at a specific salary (masseuse, nursing assistant and model are not on the list) or the company has to prove they have advertised the job across the UK and EU for a certain amount of time and have found no suitable applicants before they can hire you. With 500 million people in the EU and high unemployment at the moment, a work visa would likely be very difficult to get unless you work in a specialised, highly skilled field, doing a job that almost no one else can do. You would also need to meet minimum salary requirements and your visa would be tied to your job... if you left the job you would also have to leave the UK unless you could get another work visa with a different company.

You can read more about work visas here: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/working/tier2/general/
