Probably a dumb question
« on: October 29, 2004, 08:52:43 PM »
...but as my tax status has never been anything other than "single/0 dependents", I'm wondering how to go about filing next year, sinc eI'm married now.  I know I should file as 'married filing separately', and put 'NRA' in for my husband's details, but is there anything else I need to do?  Read something about claiming exemptions, is that anything I need to worry about?  Thanks.  :)

Yes, file married filing separately with NRA.  You will continue to claim yourself (personal exemption) but you will not claim your husband barring unusual circumstances (unless he has no income).  That is it.  It is really similar to when you just filed single, except you check the married filing separately box.

Rock on.  Thanks Sara.  Oh, I have to use the 1040-A form now and can no longer use 1040-EZ, right?  Thanks again.  :)

Thought so.  Awell, I'm familiar enough with the A that it shouldn't be too much of a problem.  :)
