Best first lines in fiction

My favourites?

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." - The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger by Stephen King

“Very early in my life it was too late.” - Marguerite Duras, The Lover

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Love The Dark Tower opening.

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.....

Or "Claudia knew that she could never pull off the old-fashioned kind of
running away. That is, running away in the heat of anger with a knapsack
on her back. She didn't like discomfort; even picnics were untidy and
inconvenient: all those insects and the sun melting the icing on the
cupcakes. Therefore, she decided that her leaving home would not be just
running from somewhere but would be running to somewhere. To a large
place, a comfortable place, an indoor place, and preferably a beautiful
place. And that's why she decided upon the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York City."

Excellent!

Listen before you go out now and start the Dark Tower series....it is my opinion that he should have just ended it right there with the opening line.

Already read.  SIGH! Am I the only person who didn't like the last book?  The comics are good though and look amazing.
