Posting a box from the US
« on: March 28, 2014, 06:57:08 AM »
I need a few things sent over from the US and my father is telling me it will be $72 to ship a small box of things with 3-5 day postage.  We are talking a bike helmet,  pair of bike shorts, three bike jerseys, two lightweight cycling jackets, and my tax documents.  Is this right?  Is there a cheaper way to mail that?

Alternatively - what is the best way, normally, to mail boxes over from the US?  I have seen some folks on here send household goods or boxes of clothes for closer to $100.  Not sure if its because he is sending it airmail or not.

Any tips appreciated!

I've found the cheapest ways to post things from the US to the UK is through USPS as opposed to UPS or FedEx... I recently shipped 11lbs of fabric to my friend for $72... It was a rather large and quite heavy package... I honestly prefer USPS because it's relatively quick and the price is so much better than the other options...

If you're posting or being posted personal belongings, make sure you put that on the (usually) green customs note at the post office. Otherwise, there's a good chance you'll get hit with customs charges.

It might be cheaper to split the items up and send them in a couple of smaller boxes weighing under 2lbs each. You can get an estimate of posting charges, with box dimensions and weights, from USPS.com.
