Alcohol and checked luggage
« on: April 11, 2014, 07:21:01 PM »
Hi everyone

I was looking online and couldn't find an answer. My fiance's best friend has asked me to pick up a bottle of alcohol that is exclusively sold in only 6places in the US. And bring it across. Is it just simple enough to wrap it in clothes and have it in my checked bag? I'm curious. Thanx!

Hope this helps ... Found it online ...
Alcohol allowances
You can bring in either of the following (but not both):

1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs (over 22% alcohol)
2 litres of fortified wine (eg port, sherry), sparkling wine or any other alcoholic drink that’s less than 22% alcohol
Or you can combine these allowances - so you could bring in 1 litre of fortified wine and half a litre of spirits (both half of your allowance).

You can also bring in both of the following:

16 litres of beer
4 litres of still wine

Yes, it's fine to just put it in your checked bag.

I tend to wrap the bottle in plastic bags first, and then in a towel/clothes-- just as an extra precaution in case it breaks.   I've brought bottles back&forth several times now, but nothing's ever broken.  I do find that every time I bring a bottle of liquor to/from the US, my checked baggage is inspected by the TSA though.

I recommend investing in a strong cardboard wine/spirits bottle tube, saves wasting any of the precious contents!
