Minute Rice Equivalent
« on: April 21, 2014, 09:06:18 AM »
My sister-in-law sent me a recipe for a rice dish that she makes that I love.  It calls for Minute Rice which she says is very important.

I've done some research and Minute Rice is cooked rice that is then dried out again to reduce the cooking time.  I found that I can buy it online but I'd really rather find a UK substitute.

Suggestions?

<sigh> Why does everything from the US have to be so over-processed?

You may be able to get parboiled rice at an Asian shop - which is essentially the same thing as minute rice.

Isn't the quick-cook rice we have here basically the same thing?

Ooo, I didn't realize there is quick cook rice here.  I have always bought traditional rice or the microwave stuff in the pouches.

I'll pick some up and give the recipe a try.   :D

Nope.  I did find a few other rice recipes that I use instead now.  ;D

I have a good recipe for a "risotto" that you bake, so don't have to stand at the stove stirring for 20 minutes.  And I have a really good mexican rice recipe that you also bake.

Basically, I now bake all my rice dishes...

That's very useful. I use the Instant Pot, so life is good! It makes really yummy risotto.

Just was wanting to find Minute Rice, to bring along for my musical festival camping cooking, because it's lightweight and doesn't use much fuel  :)

My sister is coming to visit next week, so I've asked her to get me some. Along with a box of Bisquick.
I don't normally ask for or use these things, so I'm sure she's a bit confused.  I normally just ask for things like chipotle chiles in adobo sauce or tamatillos (I know you can get both here if you look , but I can't be arsed usually  ;D
