Baggage Allowance Query
« on: April 30, 2014, 09:55:11 AM »
Hi all.

Sorry to ask on here, I did try google before I bothered you fine people.

My wife will be moving over soon (fantastic). We've decided to add extra baggage to the flight to bring her clothes over. An extra $120 for two extra bags, not bad!

However what happens if you order/book your flight with a company, say Iberia, but its operated by American Airlines? Who's baggage allowance do you go by?

Also, what happens if you have a connection with a different airline? Say you order it through a flight search engine.

Very confused.

Many thanks

We've booked our last two flights through Iberia but they were operated by British Airways. We went by BA's baggage allowance guidelines. But I can't imagine they would be that different. Aren't they all basically the same these days?

The baggage allowance for your entire journey should be shown when you book the flights - it will be in the booking information. The general allowance for most UK/US transatlantic flights these days is one free bag weighing 50lbs and then you pay per extra bag (it used to be two free 50lb bags, but they've been cutting back on allowances lately).

If you have an international flight with a domestic connection, the baggage allowance for the international portion of the journey should apply to the whole trip... as long as it is all booked as one itinerary.

So, say you book through British Airways, and your transatlantic flight is with British Airways but your US domestic flight is operated by American Airlines, then it's the BA baggage allowance that applies for the whole trip. However, if you book two separate flights: one domestic and one international, then you will have to adhere to the different baggage allowances for each flight.

Thanks guys.

Hmm this is going to be difficult to sort out.

The best flight is looking like Iberia but it's operated by AA. Luckily on Iberia's website it does state 'any flight operated by AA or BA' with their extra baggage charges so that's clearer.

Stupid question of the day. It says 'an additional bag (second) is $64. Third and subsequent is $128'.

Now i'm assuming that means $128 overall for the third bag? Not $128 on top of the first $64, equaling $192 for an extra two bags

I've been to the Iberia website and I actually read it as: the first bag is free, the second is $64 and the third is $128 - so $192 in total.

If you consider that each additional bag for business and full economy passengers is $128 per bag, it seems as though $128 is the normal price per extra bag, but with reduced economy they are giving you a half-price discount on the second bag (so just $64), and then the full price on the third bag ($128).

If you were to book directly with American Airlines, they give you the first bag free, then charge $100 for the second bag and $200 for the third bag, so $300 in total!

I have never flown with Iberia but I know on Virgin Atlantic first bag is free, additional bag $85.00 (if paid online, more if at the gate) and second extra bag $170.00 (also if paid online, more at gate) so for me with 2 checked bags it was a total of $255.00 .... They will get you one way or another ....

Thanks for that. It looks like it's a cumulative total then. Dammit!
