Things Required to Bring before Moving Over
« on: May 07, 2014, 02:31:01 PM »
Hi all.

I know there's a sticky to do with things to bring but I'm getting stuff like 'pancake maker' etc ha.

Is there anything needed that she should bring over? Except for her passport and herself, so far we have

-SSN Card
-Driver's License.

Anything else she would need before she leaves on Saturday?

Many thanks,

Ben

I would bring all important papers.  She won't need her ss card but certainly no harm in bringing it.

I would add birth certificate, immunisation records (or important medical records), a decent supply of any current medicines (May take a few weeks to get registered and into a GP), school transcripts, CV, etc.

Other things will be comforts of home (I cannot stand the spray deodorants so I always stock up on stick deodorant when in the US for example).

Thanks KFDancer.

That's very helpful. I will let her know. We just don't want to waste the opportunity to bring things over before going back to visit

I second bringing home comforts, in fact I don't travel on holiday without my favourite teabags! I found that the differences/difficulties of an international move were easier to deal with when I could have a reliably good cup of tea!

While she's collecting documents, if she has a degree or professional qualification, I recommend bringing the actual diploma or certificate.

When I was conditionally offered a job in the UK, I had to physically present my diploma to prove I had the degree that I claimed--the only time I've ever shown my diploma (except to my family when I graduated :-) I know others who've had to do this or been asked to present documentation of their membership in a professional association, etc. Just saying they had it was not enough to get past the interview stage.

Good point.  I was surprised when I applied for my visa (Tier 2) that they did not want transcripts but just wanted the diploma.  Quite a shock!

I wouldn't have thought of this but after arriving in the UK and working in HR I can definitely confirm they want to see your diploma/transcript and make a copy for your file.

That said, we weren't too picky about whether it was a diploma or a transcript and were pretty forgiving for non-UK residents (I worked with many Aussies who had moved to the UK but left their diploma at their parent's house in Australia or in storage).
