USAA will insure USC's in the UK
« on: May 28, 2014, 10:43:27 PM »
I know i am new here, and i am sorry if this has been covered before (and yes i will keep apologizing cos i'm British) but...

Having read a lot of post about UK car insurance,  just through i say that my wife has kept her US car insurance company for driving in the UK!!

She is insured with USAA, when she got her UK car she inquired on the off-chance if they would cover her for driving in the UK and they said yes!
(not sure on the exact details but i think it is specific to the car registration, and covered for all of europe) -However i do know she is no longer insured to drive vehicles in the US.  :(  (i found this hilarious at the time)
This was done with her US license, but has had no issues having obtaining a UK license, as i think the policy reads "valid driving license"

Her NCD has remained intact, and the payments are automatically taken from her US account.
I did a few calculations, and it would appear to also be a cheaper option, although i don't know what is included in the policy, but it sure was a simpler process.

Regarding taxing the car:  (as this was my main concern)

taxing it for the first time at the post office was a bit of a nightmare, as you could imagine presenting a USAA certificate...but we got it sorted eventually.
(our local post office is useless, but post office number 2 was better informed
 - and i'd done my research so wasn't going to take no for an answer this time)

Since then we have always used the government website to pay for it without issue.

Every UK car insurance provider must be registed with the Motor Insurers Bureau, and i did some digging and USAA have an office in London:

USAA Ltd.
4th Floor Fitzwilliam House, 10 St Mary Axe, London EC3A 8AE

So there you go, if you are currently insured with USAA there is an option available for you in the UK without going through all those insurance quotes.
