Taxes, a bit late, need help!
« on: June 09, 2014, 07:36:49 PM »
I know that I can e-file for free this year as a US citizen living in the UK.  I have tried a couple programs but when I pick the option to file as Married, filing separately they ask for my husband's Social Security Number, etc. but he is a UK citizen so how do I do this?

I think I'll just file on paper instead.  That way I can write NRA where it asks for husbands SSN, right?

I know I need to use the 1040a.  I also need the 2555.  Can I use the 2555ez?  I have no other income than my job.

Thanks, and sorry to sound so panic-y.  I may have to file for an extension as I've left it so late....

I just entered 'NRA' on the electronic form when it asked for DH's name. It let me through fine, so I'm hoping that was ok.

Some software programs will not allow e-filing if you have a spouse without a SSN. As such, your best bet will likely be to print off the forms and physically mail them in.

Simply write "NRA Spouse" on the line where it asks for the Social Security Number.

When filing the Form 1040A-

If you are including a payment with your return, send your return to the following address:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 1303
Charlotte, NC 28201-1303
USA

If you do not owe anything (i.e no payment to the IRS), send to:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Austin, TX 73301-0215
USA

If you need help filing form 2555EZ, check out this article;

Thank you both greenback and Frog!  Very helpful.  I am going to file on paper and mail--I won't owe anything.

I am eligible for the 2555ez, thanks for the link!  I can post this on the 16, right?  (As long as it's postmarked at the post office).

I am a bit confused.  On the 1040 on line 47 Foreign Tax Credit--what do I put here?  And I thought I didn't need to do a form 1116, Just the 2555.

I'm confused mostly because it's showing I own money, but I thought I would't as I only work part-time, most of the time, for close to minimum wage.

Well, I just realized that I should have been entering the amount on line 21 of the 1040 (this is the FEIE) as a *negative* amount.  That was certainly NOT clear until I stumbled across an example online.  It makes all the difference.  So now I don't owe anything.

Hi Andee!  You wouldn't happen to have a link to that example you saw earlier?  I would love to see some completed forms for comparison to see if I'm doing mine right! :)

Yeah, I'll find it, it's only a snippet from the 2055ez.  Can't believe I spent 12 hours on this, should have only taken 2 or 3 max!!

Thanks Andee!  I'm with you on the 12 hours!  I've got a pretty simple (in my mind) tax situation but its doing all of the reading to try to figure out if what I'm doing is correct that's holding me back!  I too am unsure about having to file form 1116.  Guess I will keep reading!

Part of my issue is that I am filing several years of back taxes at one time.  Good luck!

Hi All,

I've waited until the last minute...I have all the information compiled, but am just wondering which online eFile software you've used.

I have tried both TaxACT Online and OnLineTaxes (OLT) from the IRS's list of freeFile sites (http://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp?ck)

However, after entering all information, I get the following messages:
Quote from: TaxACT
This return does not qualify for electronic filing.
To qualify for electronic filing your tax return must have at least one of the following included on the return. Taxable Income, Adjustments to Income, Tax Liability, Credits, Other Taxes, or Tax Payments.

Quote from: OLT
Why you do not qualify for freefile with us?
Your adjusted gross income is $0 is not greater than $13,000.

YOU DO NOT QUALIFY FOR FREE FILE

Therefore--for those of you who used eFile, which program/link did you use?!

Good luck PickledSakura!  I hope someone can help you in time.  I filed mine the old-fashioned way, by snail mail.

Thanks Andee!  I filled in pdf's of the forms a while back, but keep forgetting to print them (no printer at home).   I didn't want to have to run around tomorrow trying to find an envelope, stamps, and a post box-- but it's looking like that's going to be the case anyway, because I don't feel like registering all my personal details under the multitude of websites only to find out once I've finished that it won't work either.

Thinking I should sort out my FBAR now, rather than the day before it's due (June 30th, right?!)!!

According to the IRS, someone living overseas filing several years of delinquent returns may wish to use the streamlined process to deliver the paperwork to the IRS at the lowest risk.
