Hi, first off a huge congratulations!!
How come it only took you 3 years of being married to a British Citizen and not 5 years.
marriage of 2.5 years + FLM of 2.5 years = 5 years to get a British passport

The citizenship requirement for people married to UK citizens is that they must:
1) have been resident in the UK for 3 years
AND
2) hold ILR
However, as it now takes 5 years to qualify for ILR, you have to wait 5 years to apply for citizenship too.
Under the old rules in place before July 2012, it only took 2 years to qualify for ILR, so you would have a 2-year spousal visa, then apply for ILR and then citizenship 1 year later.
Alternatively, before July 2012, people who had been married and living outside the UK with their UK spouse for more than 4 years could qualify for ILE (indefinite leave to enter) and therefore would just have permanent residency immediately... So they would just need to live in the UK for 3 years and then apply for citizenship.... Which is what kbee417 has done.
