Good index mutual fund companies in UK like Vanguard?
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:31:25 PM »
Back when I lived in the US, I made most of my mutual investments with Vanguard, as I found them to be a solid company with no-load, index funds that offered a combination of solid performance + low fees. Now that I'm in the UK, I'm wondering if there's an equivalent company here that has a similarly strong products for individual investors in mutual funds.  I looked at Vanguard UK, but seems you have to have at least £100K to invest.  I'm looking to invest more around the £10K range for now.

Would welcome your input on other fund companies out here worth considering.

Legal and General would be my recommendation. You could also look at Blackrock (the former BGI).

From a US tax perspective it is a very bad idea to invest in UK mutual fund type investments as the fall under Passive Foreign Investment Company rules. If you have a US Vanguard account it is far better to invest in Vanguard ETFs that are HMRC reporting funds. Also you should make sure any other US based funds are also HMRC reporting if you are taxed on an arising basis or remit any money from those funds to the UK so you keep your capital gains tax allowance and avoid being taxed on gains in the UK at income tax rates.

Bottom line get everything into Vanguard ETFs as they are good low cost funds and your US and UK tax filing will be simplified.

Why do you assume the OP is affected by US tax requirements?
