My grandmother had the most amazing collection of African violets in the US. She could bring them back from the dead, and look at one to make it grow & bloom. Friends even brought their near-death violets to her, and she never lost a plant as I remember. All she ever used was clay pots (unglazed) with saucers.
I've had success with ordinary clay pots as well over the years. I've found the key (as with many houseplants) is not to over water, and to feed according to recommendations. A sunny windowsill helps as well.
