Moved to UK, working US company
« on: August 07, 2014, 01:43:13 PM »
Hello,

I moved to the UK two weeks ago! I'm still working as an hourly on-call employee for my US company. They are taking out taxes and I will receive a W-2, but I am no longer receiving any benefits. I will be working for the company on a temporary basis (til about October) to finish up projects.

How do I register for HMRC to pay UK tax?

Thanks for your help!

Your employers have presumably obtained a certificate of coverage to keep you in FICA and to operate a US payroll to withhold FICA.  You - in turn - have hopefully given them a completed IRS Form 673: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f673.pdf

Your employer will want a UK payroll to withhold PAYE and possibly find they need to register for corporation tax in relation to UK tax on their new UK operation as they may possibly now have a permanent establishment in the UK.

You'll want an English/Scottish law compliant employment contract giving you paid holidays, maternity rights, redundancy rights, a notice period and all of the other benefits of UK based employment to which are would be entitled under local law.

You'll doubtless claim the foreign earned income exclusion or foreign tax credits on your US income tax return and register for self-assessment with HMRC to obtain a UTR so that you can file a 2014-15 UK personal tax return.

The following link should get you started in registering under HMRC's system.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/online/new.htm

Generally you are considered a resident for tax purposes in the UK if you are living there for more than six months, or from the very first day if you plan on living there for an extended period of time.

I also think this video will be very useful to you as it will explain how your US taxes will  be affected by your working in the UK.
