Human Resource employment in the UK for US citizen
« on: September 13, 2014, 04:23:58 PM »
Dear Forum

I have only registered with the site today, so this is my first post. I would really appreciate anyone out there who may be able to provide some guidance or advice?

I am a US citizen (currently in DC) and I'm engaged to my bf of ten years, who is a UK citizen and lives in Worcester. We are getting married in 2015 but in the meantime I am really keen to find employment and move to the UK.

I am a Senior HR Manager and I'm trying to find companies that hire US citizens in the UK. I studied in the UK to get my Masters degree in 2010-11.

Any advice or knowledge out there?

Massive thanks for any feedback

Bethany

If you wait until after you are married and have your visa, you will have a MUCH easier time finding employment as you will have the right to work in the UK. Plus you will be here to interview for positions, etc.

If you want to find employment prior to getting married, you will have a challenge in front of you.  You will need to find an employer in the UK who is willing to sponsor your visa.  In order to sponsor you, one of the requirements for the employer will be to prove that there is not a single other person in the UK or whole of the EU that can perform that job (a pool of 500 million people).

Another option is if your current employer has a UK office, you can see if they will transfer you to the UK.

Yes, you will want to wait until you are married. You're very unlikely to find a company that will want to hire you and sponsor you for a work visa. A company has to show why they need to hire you out of all the other employees in the UK and EU. So it's very tough to get a job in the UK unless you already have permission to live and work there, which you will have once you are married.
