Moving furniture from US to UK
« on: September 21, 2014, 09:59:57 PM »
Hello Forum

I was wondering if anyone had any advice or first hand experience regarding how I could transport my furniture from the US to the UK? I am moving to the UK in 2015 and am in the process of planning and researching for my move. Any guidance would be appreciated!

The cheapest way is a container that you load and unload yourself. We've done this multiple times. If you plan your load, your furniture will arrive in as perfect condition as it left the US.

You can arrange your own container or go through a shipping agent. Cost varies with origin/destination. If you are some distance from a container port, the road transport component will be greater that it would otherwise.

Beware the quotes for containers that are based on cubic feet and/or weight. A container is a container; it holds what it holds. A 20 foot container costs almost as much as a 40 foot to ship, as the road transport component doesn't vary and the sea transport is nearly the same.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Or you can pay extra and have everything packed for you, and unpacked at the other end. If your move is company sponsored I'd go for this option as it is much easier.
