I think it's a stupid story, and I think it's safe to say Tykeman does, too. I wonder, though, if Sirius is drawing conclusions about the Labour Party based on stories in the Daily Mail.
It was a "Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't" moment. I generally don't give money to people begging on the streets, however with all the cameras there Milliband obviously then thought "oh, I'd better put something in otherwise I'll look heartless"and just went in his pocket to grab some change - at that point what is the right amount? Maybe he put in all the loose change he had, I know I've done that at the supermarket when someone is bag packing for charity and then I find I only had 10p and I feel a right skin flint! If he'd put in a fiver they'd have said how out of touch he is with ordinary working people if he can afford to put that much in.
I've seen conflicting reports on this, some claim that he threw in "a handful of loose change" and that the camera just caught him having hold of a 2p.
Either way, what concerns me more is what politicians will do, long term, to help people who are having to resort to begging, what policies they can come up with, not how much they put in one person's cup.
I'm staunch Labour, leaning socialist, but I will defend Cameron when I see photo's that are done just to make him look an idiot.
