Virginia Beach Girl In Glasgow....
« on: November 06, 2014, 04:52:22 PM »
Hello! Thought I'd best give acquaintance and hearty thanks as I have been reading at this board throughout my long journey over the pond to the West End of Glasgow where I have been living for 2 1/2 years now...

This site has been a comfort and source of knowledge both!!!

With gratitude I thought it was long time for me to give back in return!!!!!!!!!!!

Love,
She.

Welcome -

I spent many a day working in VB, Norfolk, Chesapeake and other parts of the Tidewater, and lived in both Chesterfield and Powhatan Counties for 11 years before we finally got back to the UK.

Just of curiosity, I hope you are aware that VA tries to keep you as a domiciliary resident forever, requiring a tax return? I'm in the process of getting a ruling on change of domicile - an arduous process, but if you are interested, I'm happy to share what I know.

Cheers!
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Dear Vadio,

Thank you so very much for your concern but I lived in North Carolina for 8 years after leaving Va Beach and then Delaware after that before I came to the UK....so technically I am a resident of Delaware still and plan to remain so...

I was born in DC and have lived all over Virginia and up and down the eastern shore-board but for the sake of argument I lived in Va Beach the longest (about 20 years)...Bit of a Gypsy you see...

Gratitude for the Welcome!!! Best of luck to you in all your future endeavors dealing with the state of Va & Congrats on your upcoming ceremony November 10th!

She.

well done for breaking ties to VA years ago :-). You would not believe the pile of paper I had to send to show that we don't live there, have no ties, and never, ever intend to return. All this after being a VA resident for 10 out of my almost 67 years. It's been over a year since I initiated the request for a ruling  - and STILL no decision. It's a pain in the patoot for sure, so I try to share my bit of knowledge gained since starting the process if at all possible.

I've been a bit of a gypsy as well - born in North Carolina, but lived in VT, NH, IN and finally VA at various points. DH spent significant time working abroad (which is how we first met in the 70s), so he's even more nomadic. At this stage it's hard to blast him out of the house to go anywhere that's not a day trip.

We are well and truly settled this time, and I couldn't be happier.

Wow! You have lived in some truly lovely states...Sorry to hear about the difficulties with the state (truly a commonwealth) of VA...I had no idea they put people through such a thing! I got lucky then!

Settled is a word unfamiliar to me yet....maybe someday...

Hiya... I live in the West End as well, and I love it.
I'm really going to miss it when we move to Helensburgh next month.

Thanks... it is nice, but... very different from Partick!
However, I am slowing down a bit in my old age, so maybe it's about time for a slower pace of life... [smiley=dead.gif]
