Paying US Bills
« on: November 11, 2014, 08:07:13 PM »
HELP! I have been researching this and my mind is spinning.  ???
I will be moving to the UK for at least a year, possibly longer. I still have my student loans and a CC I have to pay off each month. I lived in the UK two years ago with NatWest and paid a fee to transfer money to my US account through them and my US bank account every month!

Has anyone found a cheaper alternative to send money to their US accounts for bill pay?

THANK YOU!

Uhm, I think transferring from a bank account to a bank account through PayPal is only a 1% fee. Which is kind of amazing. It's how my Brit and I plan to pay my US bills. Though I can pay my student loan in GBP if I wanted to.

Here's a link to their fee page for you if you'd like to see for yourself.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I use either PayPal or XETrade, which usually work out a few pounds cheaper than transferring through Natwest directly.

I use PayPal to pay my Student Loans.  Because we're never transferring large sums of money at one time, it seems to be the easiest way to go.

Just how secure is PayPal?  DH is very very dubious about any online transactions and refuses to even do online banking.  Transferring money to my son to pay household expenses (I still own the house) is a nightmare.  One bank transfer from Barclays to my account in US created problems because they messed up some coding.

I've found it to be very secure.  It is an https:// website and requires verification by the bank, etc.  Plus, you always receive e-mails when anything is done through your account so I imagine it would be fairly easy to notice if weird things happen.  I have a special bank account that is only used for PayPal.  I have never had any problems using the site but, like anything, it does require you to monitor the account.

Paypal is very secure. Just follow the typical precautions of not sharing your password with anyone, not choosing an "easy" password, etc. and you'll be fine. I've been using paypal for purchases for at least 4-5 years, if not more, and we just started doing money transfers recently. The first one we did was over a year ago.

I've been quite happy using Transferwise to transfer money from my accounts (UK to US) for the past year or so.
