Which brings us back to poor old Thoreau who spent a night in jail for refusing to pay his poll tax in 1846.  In protest for the Mexican War and probably a protest against slavery.

Or even further back to the Peasants' Revolt.

Maybe we should move to the bake sale model...

As you've noted, several years after the war income tax was done away with, but then reinstated in 1894, and only on the rich with incomes over $4,000, which was 'the 1%' of the population back then. But, in 1895, the tax was overturned by the Supreme Court and done away with. No more income tax.

Federal income tax was not introduced again until 1914(? or 1913) to pay for another war, WW1.

Do we have income tax because we have war, or do we have war because we have the income tax to pay for it?

It is certainly an interesting aspect of the social history of war.

The income tax was reinstated with the 16th Amendment which overturned the SCOTUS ruling.

Rats!  I'm not a subscriber, so I can't read the whole article.  :(

It looks interesting though....  Is it worth subscribing to the Sunday Times in general?

Rupert Murdoch owns it.

You and I may be able to guess the answer to that question, but if right, when Boris finds out he can not apply for a student loan at a local community college to advance his education, he WILL be upset.

According to reports, Boris has 'settled' with the IRS.

Even if the settlement was only $1, it's a win-win for both sides; but no one will ever know.

I like the last bit where Boris says that US citizenship is difficult to give up, a lot of people would say it's expensive now.

Anyway if Boris wants "out" he's now ok with the IRS and I'm sure he'll just pay a lawyer to do all the leg work for him.

To be fair to journalists, the story today was broken by the FT first, several hours before other media covered it. The story is behind a paywall but can be read for free by registering for a free user name and password: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/149b859c-a15b-11e4-bd03-00144feab7de.html
