Shipping stuff over using UPakWeShip
« on: December 26, 2014, 06:33:58 PM »
I only have a few things to bring over but not sure who to use to get them from Oklahoma to UK. Has anyone used "UpakWeShip"? Any advise or comments on who to use and your experiences with them would be greatly appreciated.

I moved things over in 2 different shipments (PA to UK) -- one with a "regular" moving company and one with UPak.  I had good/bad experiences with both.

Regarding UPak, they were significantly cheaper.  I chose them because of price and because for this second shipment all my belongings were already in Steralite tubs ready to be loaded onto pallets.  The only issue that I ended up having with UPak is that a number of my tubs ended up broken beyond repair.  I'm not really sure what they were doing with my pallets because the tubs were the heavy duty ones.  They did wrap the one that was completely destroyed and all the contents were undamaged, but I don't really know what happened.  In the end 3 out of 30 tubs needed to be replaced, but nevermind.

I have a friend who used them in their move to Amsterdam (from OR) and they had no issues whatsoever.

We used uPakWeShip UCube service to ship 50 cubic feet of stuff from Boston to Dundee, Scotland.  They deliver the UCube and you need to assemble the UCube outside or in a garage.  They have some very good videos showing how it is done on there website.  Everything we have shipped arrived at my son's house with no damage.  I would recomend them to anyone.

I will second that recommendation.  I just used the 50 cu ft U Cube to ship my stuff from the San Francisco Bay Area to just west of Newcastle and not a single item in that box was broken or damaged.  My things left the Bay Area on October 1 and got to our door here on November 25, and I did get a wee bit impatient that last week... or two... okay three.  ;)

An odd shoe-in for UPak:

I went with a different company and things went disastrous (they stole everything and sold bits of it to local shops) and a ton of people keep telling me that I should have gone with UPak because they did and had no problems.

Wow, sorry to hear you go stuff stolen!  I would say that moving our stuff with UPakWeShip was the easiest part in this journey to move us to Scotland.  I was very impressed with the service and I liked the fact I could track the ship carrying our Ucube over the ocean. so we knew when it arrived in the UK and were able to let our son know to expect a phonecall in the coming days to arrange delivery.

Becca/Kezzie - how much did the 50 cubic feet cost you from Upakweship? Also how many mid size carton boxes will it fit in 50 cubic feet?

The cost is for door to door service so it will be diffrent for each person. We had 8 large Home Depot heavy duty packing boxes in our Ucube as well as a Cycle, 2 large area rugs, tool chest with tools inside, framed art and pictures, Plastic Bin with our Christmas Decorations and as much clothes as we could fit in and round everything.

Hope this helps.  I found their website and videos very helpful, we emailed for a quote and they replied very quickly.

Thanks Kezzie. I spoke to Andre today and unfortunately he was not that helpful. He was trying to sell me pallette (100 cubic feet) and I told him that I don't have anymore than 35 to 45 cubic feet of stuff, so I need rate card for the cube. He is like no it is better you use pallette as you can stack up more in it. He also said it will cost more if it is door to door service (including custom cleranace). Anyways I asked him for the quotes.
Honestly I don't want to spend more than 1000 bucks for the shipping for the stuff I want to take :-).
How did you manage the Customs Clearance?

Sorry they were not as helpful as you had hoped.  Upack did everything for us, all we had to do was assemble the cube and pack our things inside and call them once it was ready for collection.  They did all the customs for us and once the cube was cleared they contacted my son to arrange delivery as we were sending it to his address. We were just over $1,200 for our Ucube from Boston to Dundee, Scotland.

My cost for shipping door to door from the San Francisco East Bay Area to just west of Newcastle was $1,209 last October.  I was also quoted a rate of $12.91 per cubic foot for any additional boxes (and I ended up with one additional box just under 1 cubic foot - it looked like a little pimple on top of the UCube!  ;) ).

I'm not sure how many medium sized boxes the UCube would take, but if you did have the same size boxes it sure would be easier to pack! I ended up with all sorts of odd shapes and sizes in there and at the very end was throwing rolls of toilet paper in, just to fill in the gaps with something useful. LOL - My husband must have thought I was nuts when we unpacked the darn thing.  ;D

Thank you all for the info. I spoke to another person from UPakWeShip ("Peter") and got better rates for 30 cubic feet. So I am still in game with them.

Did you buy any Insurance from them?

I did, although I wasn't sure about it a the time either.  A few people here on UK-Yankee recommended it and, as it wasn't too expensive, I figured better safe than sorry.

I bought it too. It was inexpensive enough that I couldn't justify not getting it.
