Oh well if it cant be done then we will look into getting a card from my TSB as we have kept a savings account there since 2005 and we will be moving our savings over there as soon as we get the visa..

Thanks for the info, I did wonder that the Capital One rep made it sound very easy to do.  My parents moved there Amex card back to the UK with no issues at all.  As we clear our balance every month the rate of interest would not be a deal braker I liked Capital One because they dont charge foriegn transaction fees.

I sure hope it can be done, and will keep my fingers crossed you are able to follow through on what the Cap One rep told you.  I will admit, it has been absolutely astounding to me the amount of misinformation people have given me about various aspects of moving to the UK and establishing yourself here.  I just hope this isn't another one of those cases.

My experience calling Capital One UK was the same as lyonaria's unfortunately.  However, if you were offered a cc with ridiculously high interest, I agree with Geeta that as long as you pay it off each month it doesn't matter what the interest rate is and it will still build your credit history. I just really hate the annual fee type cards that are often the only ones offered to people with bad or no credit history.  When there are so many that are free, why should I pay a fee for a regular, nothing fancy credit card?

Hi,

Just thought I'd pop back on to mention that my husbands Capital One and Barcalys Initial credit cards were offered to him on the basis of his UK credit rating only, we didn't even look into using his U.S. score. He arrived in September 2014 and we managed to get him those credit cards in January 2015 (looking at his credit rating online he only started getting a credit score in December despite having gained a bank account and bills in his name etc from the day he arrived so I can imagine that's why it took a few months.....well and possibly the lack of employment when he first arrived)
On another note we also just managed to get him a contract mobile phone to also help improve his credit rating as fast as possible (with O2) but we did have to put a deposit down which we will get back after 3 months.
