Recently, I received a call from my parents, checking that I was okay, in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. I was a bit confused, as France is generally considered to be an entirely different country from Britain- the country I live in. But apparently mom and dad had been watching a lot of Fox News, and the network had been running segment after segment about Europe’s Muslim problem...

Your'e pretty darned good at this stuff! And I liked the Big Trouble in Little China mention in your 11 January post....it is a great movie....which, like Meatballs my wife refuses to acknowledge.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

What a nice comment - thank you !

I'm just trying to have fun and be funny. Sometimes what I think is funny or insightful- no one else seems to appreciate. For example, I still think my post about Dick Van Dyke being the most important person for all modern Britons is totally true. They never shut up about him. But that blog posting had few visits or comments.

So you just keep on doing your thing.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I remember the days of messages and calls when people saw things on the news. My FB inbox was nearly flooded with messages of concern for our safety when the London riots were going on. We were in Blackburn. But, 'it looks bad on the news and I was worried about you.....'

When we lived in the US prior to going to the UK, and now that we are back, hubby's mum will call with her concerns whenever there is huge hurricane news (we're in Indiana), or tornadoes in any state, or rioting in Ferguson, MO, or any huge event here. Just to make sure we are okay.

Mary Poppins was on after Christmas and I had this discussion with my MIL.  Yes, it's terrible. No, it doesn't make the movie any worse or less lovable.  Yes, I know that not all Brits have a Cockney accent or are the poshest of the posh.  No, not all British actors can do a good American accent.  Of course you can't tell the difference; I can't always tell when an American is doing a bad British accent.  IT WORKS BOTH WAYS! Le sigh.

A little closer to London than you were but I got message from lots of family members during the London 'riots' asking if I was ok.  Even my conservative cousins with whom I hadn't spoken in years paused their viewing of Fox News long enough to check that I wasn't in immediate danger.  It was quite sweet of them, actually.
