Hello from Wokingham
« on: January 15, 2015, 12:46:50 PM »
Greetings, fellow Americans!  My husband and I live in Crowthorne in Wokingham with our three-year-old daughter.  We came over here for my husband's job (he's the brewer at Siren in Finchampstead) and we've lived here since May 2013, but we haven't managed to make ANY new friends.  We have some friends in the UK from our travels, but no one who lives locally. It makes me feel so homesick...

We're from NC, but we've been living overseas since 2009. We lived in Denmark before this, where we didn't have any trouble making friends.  I don't know what it is about this area...

In any case, if anyone's in the area, I'd love to get together sometime and swap stories about your expat experience if you're interested.

I like reading, writing and crafty stuff, and we like playing board games and doing touristy stuff.

Have a great day!
Mahalia  ;D

Hi Mahalia.  Sorry you're not making any friends there.  It does take quite a while for most of us.  Hope you find some other UK-Yers in your area.

Oh, goodness. Crowthorne is small. That makes it a little harder. What's going on in Wokingham that takes your fancy? Does your local library have stuff on that you could go to?

Do you drive? That could reduce social barriers.

These things can take time. Hope you are able to get out and find some things you enjoy. If you start with what you like, meeting other people may get easier.

Mahalia, you're only about 20 mins away from me. Have you been to South Hill Park?  It's a great place, there's always something going on there. I don't have any local friends here, either, but that's because I don't have a driver's license here and I'm usually stuck in the house.

Hi Mahalia,

While I won't be in Wokingham I will be just outside Woking :) Sounds like they would be next door - but I just checked a map, and you're in Berkshire while I'll be in Surrey.  ;) Anyway, South East! I'm looking forward to meeting some expats and having some American friends when I finally stay for good at the end of this summer.

Cheers,
Jesse

Bit dated post but I'm an American expat in the Finchampstead area. Looking for other Americans in the area. Happy to meet up.

There are 3 or 4 other Americans in Finch that I know of.   :D

Hi,

Hopefully the OP has been able to make more friends and acquaintances here since the initial post!

I'm not on facebook (yet) and i know there's plenty of groups etc and although I'm not in the immediate area, I'm often in and around due to some contract work I do.

Due to the nature of that contracting, I've met a few American's who are in the area and may well already be part of this or any other groups!

Happy to meet up as only a short drive away really !

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!
