« on: November 08, 2004, 09:05:27 AM »
Does anyone know where I can get a can of evaporated milk? I really wanna try to make a pumkin pie. I got the can of pumkin but didnt realize the recipe called for evaporated milk. I checked with Tesco and Safeway already. Do they call it something else here?  :)

I found it at Sainsbury's...don't know why you're having a problem finding it - maybe it's where you're looking in the store?  It is a bit more "creative" where things are kept here.  ;)  But I've had no problem finding it when I need it.  If you still have a problem, let me know - I'll post you the tin I have in my cupboard!  ;D

Ditto.  I frequently see Carnation in both Tesco and Sainsburys.

In my local stores, the Carnation is with the UHT (long-life) milk.

Pebbles I have ofudn it in both the UHT and baking areas.... they like to move it I think at times.  If worse comes to worse you can order it online through tesco, sainsbury's or ocado.  :)

I get confused between Evaporated and Condensed milk and I think what you find over here even when it's Carnation (it's usually either Carnation or Nestle) that it's condensed milk.

What I have is evaporated milk.  Don't know what brand it is - just know it's evaporated milk.

Stella you can find both.  Condensed milk is the sweet stuff.  Evaporated milk is not.  Evaporated milk is milk that has had 60% of its water removed. Sweetened condensed milk has 50% of the water removed. The remaining mixture is 40% sugar and very sticky and sweet.

You can subsitute light cream for evaportated milk.

Evaporated milk is a way to get the creaminess of cream without all the fat.

I'm pretty sure they're the same thing

LOL. So I guess this explains why I couldnt find it in the stores!
I am 37 and have NEVER made anything from scratch. In fact my husband cooks most the meals. Im so hopeless in the kitchen. This pumpkin pie "project" will be my first attempt at making something from scratch. I sense a disaster! I always wanted to be one of those baking type moms that bakes cookies for all occasions. My 6 year old wants to bake gingerbread men for xmas. I brought back some boxes of mix from the USA. Im keeping my fingers crossed.  ???
