occupational/personality tests?
« on: November 08, 2004, 01:34:47 PM »
Hey all! I have another big job interview this Thurs and Fri. I'll post more about it shortly but just wanted to ask, has anyone taken some kind of occupational/personality test? The job is in my field (graphic designer) but is part of the Dorchester County Council. I have no idea what these tests are about but it's the first thing I'll do on Thursday.

Yikes!

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I took one when I was hired as a bank teller.  Part of the test was obviously trying to figure out if I'd steal (but come on, the questions were so obvious anyone could say NO just to get the job!).  The other questions asked what my reactions would be to particular situations and I can say that I really did have to think about how I would react.  I think the tests are interesting and might give the employer a general idea of how you'd handle the job, so answer as professionally as possible.  (Unless it's just one of those obvious "Do you want to steal from the Council?" kinda tests.  Then, just click NO for every question!).   ;D

B-  I have had several and they all pretty much came out saying I was who I was.  You can get good at guessing the answers they want but to be honest I never bothered as I think you need to be a good fit for your job.  Why say you love high pressure work if you hate it?

Other ones are like Lola said and more along the lines of trying to see if you would steal or if you are empathetic etc.  They are a bit tedious, but overall I found them useful.

Oh and don't worry they really won't be able to tell how crazy you really are. ;) :-*

Good luck!

If they are true personality tests, I would caution against guessing what they want you to say. I've had some training in giving said tests and they actually have a set of questions mixed in that are designed to weed out the people who are trying to "be good" and answer the way they think they should....

I agree that's why I said I would never do it, but there are those that will try....

Especially for those thinly veiled sales ones....  though I don't think those can be counted as real personality tests anyways.. :-\\\\
