Where do I start??
« on: April 01, 2015, 05:52:39 PM »
I am sorry if I have missed the answers to these questions.  I'll happily be redirected to another thread.

I just moved here to the UK a little over a year ago and it is the first year I have to file for taxes in the US as an expat.  Basically I would like to know how you go about it, what forms do I need to fill out etc.

A little about myself.  My taxes should be dead easy.  I have nothing back in the US. I never owned a house and I do not have any investments etc.  Don't know if that is relevant information for tax purposes but thought it would help.

OK now I'm rambling, I just don't know where to start.  Please if you could help me that would be fantastic even if it is just showing me the link to the relevant website.

Thanks!

The best place to start is by reading IRS Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens Abroad.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p54.pdf

A form 1040, Schedule B, form 8965 (ACA exemption), and either form 2555 or form 1116 would be a good start. And don't forget FinCEN 144 and/or form 8938 if you meet the requirements for filing either.

There may be other forms, depending on your circumstances.

Normally, most people have two decisions to make: if married, do you file MFS or MFJ (married filing jointly) and do you use form 2555 or form 1116. Most use MFS as it keeps a spouse out of US tax affairs. As for the forms, 2555 is the easiest, but 1116 can be more tax advantageous.

You may also find the following info from Americansabroad of help, the "dummies guide - US taxes abroad".

This is great, exactly what I was hoping for.

I definitely don't want to get my spouse involved in the tax stuff.  So filing on my own is how I would like to go.  Since I don't earn that much here and don't have dependants etc. I hope one of the simpler forms will be for me.

Thanks again!  :) :)

2555EZ looks to be the form for me.  Feel so much better now!

Remember you have UK tax obligations too.
