Academic/Social Work Job Market
« on: April 14, 2015, 02:52:19 PM »
I'm relatively new to posting a topic, so if this is the wrong forum please feel free to move it. I am about to complete a PhD in social work and I'm looking to move to the UK. I am wondering if anyone can give me a sense of the academic job market in the UK or in general, the type of job market a PhD in social work would be looking at in the UK? I specialize in developing and evaluating social work policies impact children and I'm just not sure where that would fit in to the UK job market. Would I be relegated to universities, non-profit agencies, government policy work? Does anyone have any experience working in academia in the US and UK? How do they compare? Thank you very much for your help!

This is the main jobs portal for academic and research posts in the UK:
www.jobs.ac.uk

For social work research and academic posts, see:

I think the challenge would be that as social work is a culturally inculcated job, how will you gain a foundation of the history and current practice of social welfare policy and law in the UK as it differs from the US and each state?

UK children's charities: it would probably only be the big ones that might use policy analysts like NSPCC and Barnardos, Action for Children, Childline and charities don't tend to pay well. I think for a work permit, you'd have to look at research or academic posts to be more likely to meet the financial requirements.

UK Children's Charities:

I am a Canadian trained BSW with a lot of UK experience, both in local authority and charity in the North and South (of England) with adults and children. I also have UK qualifications in health and social care and disability policy.

Hope that helps.

Where have you done your social work PhD? Where are you wanting to move to?

Perhaps a think tank or lobbyist group?

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

You might want to aim for academic work in social policy, more generally, using the first link I gave you. Also check the Calling All Social Workers thread. Lots of resources there. Start with the most recent stuff first. Good luck!  :)
