Getting an NHS Number
« on: April 25, 2015, 07:26:32 PM »
I can't find any clear easy to find answers on this so I'll just ask here.  How does one get a NHS Number?

I received my FLR(M) and BRP card on 14-4 and since I booked my appointment before the price went up, I did not pay the new fee.

Since my wife and I are going on honeymoon next week, I went along with her to get her travel injections to her GP.  I grabbed a form to register for a GP however they ask for an NHS number.  Do they give me this number after filling out the registration form or do I have to get this from somewhere else?  If so where exactly?

You don't get the number until you register at the GP.

As geeta said, If you don't have one already, you will be automatically issued with an NHS number when you register with the GP, when your details are entered into their system.

The reason the form asks you for your NHS number is because people born in the UK will have been issued with one at birth and so are asked to provide it when they register with a new GP.

When I first registered with our GP (back in the mists of time) I was sent a card (cardboard) with the number.  Since then, of course, they have changed to different numbers but do not give a card -- or at least our GP's said it "wasn't necessary" because they could look you up by name.  The best I could get was my new number scrawled on a scrap of paper.

Aw, I got a card for my number last year. It took like 6 months though, cause I don't think my GP sent of the paperwork for awhile. haha. I think it was partially my fault since I didn't have a bill with my name on it yet when I got set up.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

My fiancé registered at my doctor's surgery and got his NHS number sent by letter. Not sure why they don't do a card any more.

The letter actually comes with a small 'card ' with your details,  attached.
Married 1966, left UK 1969, returned 1998, left again 2000, returned June 2014 (husband on spousal visa) granted FLR(M) November 30th 2016  and ILR on  24th May, 2019. Yeah!

Yes, that's how mine came as well.  Also, after we were married I went into our GP's office, told them my new name, and then got another letter with a 'card' enclosed with my married name.
Here 2 years as of Oct. 1, 2016.

I think it must depend on the GP surgery or the area you live in - I received a letter with a 'card' attached when I registered at a GP in Lincoln last year, but I didn't get one when I registered with a GP a couple of miles down the road in the next village a couple of years earlier.
