Depending what field you work in, be aware that the salaries offered in the UK may differ compared to what you may be expecting/used to.

I work with a (British) guy who had worked for my company in the US.  He moved to the UK a few months ago, and continues to work for the same company, but has noted that he's suffered 30% drop in pay--which he wasn't exactly expecting as part of the transfer.

I suppose money isn't everything, but just something to be aware of.

Very good point.

I experienced about a £15k drop in salary, and I'm doing practically the same job I did in the US, at approximately the same level.  It has been 4 years here, and I'm just about to reach what I was making in the US when I left.

That being said, in the US I would regularly work 50 hour weeks (without overtime... that didn't kick in until the 60 hour/week point), while at my current workplace, it is not expected to work more then 38 hours per week.  Not to mention the generosity of holiday and sick leave.  Swings and roundabouts.  :)

Thank you for the tip!  I wish I could say that I was going to take a pay cut, but I work in higher education, so I am used to small salaries :)  Although I did find a position that matches my experience, but the salary is much higher than any of the positions I did before, so I'm wondering what the catch is, but can't seem to find one.

I work in Higher Education too and I have seen that the salaries here vary wildly from what I am used to in the US. Job postings at my level (from the US) have been much higher salaried (which honestly scares me a bit!) but one or two steps down are much, much lower. Also, I am realizing that I will have to take a much more entry level job because, while I've been in HE for over 10 years in the US, the system is very different here and I don't know any of the EU/UK policies and procedures.

I did notice that too!  What area of HE?  I have been fortunate to work over here before and also sending students to study abroad here, so I have some experience, but I just figured I would need to start from the bottom.  Although, I may just have to start from the bottom because there aren't many universities in the North West looking for people in international education.

My most recent title was Director of Academic Affairs. I've mostly been in Student Services for about 10 years. I was responsible for all international programs for graduate business at Arizona State for the last 5 years or so, plus academic planning, policies & procedures, academic issues, probation/dismissals, etc. That kind of thing. Some dabbling in Admissions. There don't seem to be a ton of schools in the Midlands looking for me either! I just keep applying and hope that someone will bite eventually!

I've worked in France before but not the UK. You may have an easier time already having experience here!

I found that most of the positions I want and am qualified for are in London!  I guess we don't have to stay in the North West, but we quite like it here and it is so much more affordable than London.

Good luck!  I am sure with your experience you will find something.  A school would be crazy not to hire you!

This. Pay is not everything for quality of life, IME.

I'm assuming those of you in Higher Education are registered with www.jobs.ac.uk?

The Higher Education Policy Institute: http://www.hepi.ac.uk/ and the Higher Education Commission: http://www.policyconnect.org.uk/hec/ and government policy: https://www.gov.uk/government/topics/higher-education may have relevant stuff for you.

Thanks! I actually just contacted today for an interview, so fingers crossed! Good luck to you!  :) I just need enough of a salary to ease the financial strain on my husband and hopefully allow us some breathing room!  :D
