Higher Ed Interviews/Excel Test
« on: June 02, 2015, 10:48:50 AM »
Well it has been an exciting week... I was granted FLR(M) and I landed an interview!  In the U.S., while it may vary from school to school, in general I know to expect an interview with a couple of panels/committees and it is usually an all day affair, but I guess I'm not sure what to expect here.  I have been doing research online and have sent a few queries to former British colleagues, but if anyone can provide a bit of information, I would be very grateful!  For example are the interviews short or do they take up a good portion of the day, do you meet with various departments you may work with, is the interview with a panel/committee or just one-on-one.

Also they are requiring an Excel test.  I have never taken one of these, but I am guessing it is basic Excel skills?

I know I am probably overthinking all of this, but I'm so ready to get back to work  ;D

I think that sounds likely.

The basic computer skills qualifications here are CLAIT and ECDL.

Maybe do some homework about the level of excel training in these:

Congrats and good luck!

Thank you!  I found a list of test topics to look over that will come in handy for preparing.

My OH has interviewees sit an internal Excel test.  He's a business analyst, so the "test" is just an example dataset which he expects the interviewee to interpret/manipulate/draw conclusions from/make predictions off of, as these are the things that are relevant in the role.  He's more interested in people who can use more advanced functions like vlookup, or create useful PivotTables than someone (like me) who only uses Excel for basic functionality.

I'm not sure what sorts of things you'd need for the role you're interviewing for, but maybe have a look at some of the more advanced (less basic?) functions to prepare and practice as well-- YouTube has some great tutorials!

So after studying a list I pulled off the web, it turns out that it is similar to what you suggested, they provided me with some data and asked me to prepare a summary of costs.  Use of some formulas like =COUNTA and =SUM were the most important to the test.  However, I did forget to add the VAT  :-\\\\  My husband joked that Americans should be used to adding tax to everything, but I'm so used to the tax already being added here (which I love, no surprises at the till).  I think the hardest part was familiarizing myself with the version of Excel they were using!
