Flying into Amsterdam -> ferry to England?
« on: June 30, 2015, 10:27:45 PM »
Hey guys! I was just wondering if anyone else has gone this route.

Our revised plan is to fly with our two cats into Amsterdam instead of London so they can be in the cabin with us, instead of being shipped by cargo. We'll be flying with Delta and I called to double check, and carrying them on with us on the flight shouldn't be a problem!

Once we get to Amsterdam, we're planning on getting a train to the Hook of Holland, and then taking the ferry from Holland to Harwich, which will bring us pretty close to our final destination (Norwich).

Has anyone flown into Amsterdam with pets? Or arrived in the UK with pets via boat? This seems like a much less stressful option for both us and our kitties, but I'm a little wary of how complicated it seems. Any advice is always appreciated :)

Yes you can take cats on the ferries.  I researched this quite a bit - in the end gave my cats to a good home which was devastating.  What looked like the best bet for us was to fly Delta into Paris and then take the train from Paris into London.  You still need all of your documentation and be prepared to pay a small fee to DEFRA at the port.  Some people had difficulty due to staff ignorance with ferry folks but they literally waited until that person went off duty and tried again and went through.  Also, ferry's charge about £20 per cat as a passenger.  At least from France.  I don't see why it would be different.  Cats may need to stay in the car during the trip.  Important: be sure the microchipper is ISO certified or else they won't be able to read the chip.  Not all vets in the US use the ISO certified chipper.  :)  Good luck!
