thank you ksand24!!! Always very helpful I have registered with my gp. Now I have another question for you and hope to pick your brains a bit more. The bank here are asking me for a national insurance number and a tax code in order to add my name to my husband's account. My question is what is the tax code? Is it the same as the NI# or do I need to apply for another number? So clueless still they don't make it any easier
The tax code is separate - it's your personal allowance for the year and is assigned to you by HMRC to determine how much money you can earn in a financial year before you are taxed on it.
It changes every financial year, because the personal allowance usually increases each year, and it consists of 3 or 4 numbers and a letter.
The code that most people born after April 5th 1938 with one job will be on for the 2015/16 financial year will be 1060L. The numbers mean that they can earn up to £10,600 before they have to start paying tax on their income and the letter 'L' means they are entitled to the basic personal allowance. Other letters will refer to other situations (i.e. M and N are marriage allowances, Y is for people born before April 5th 1938, etc.).
If you are working in the UK, your tax code will be listed on your payslips. If not, you should be able to contact HMRC to find out what your tax code is.
