For a NI number, go here:https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number

For a NHS number, you simply need to register with a local GP.  You'll likely not "get" your NHS number as it's not issued as a card.  But as soon as you register with your GP, you'll be in the system.

Bite the bullet and apply for your provisional license.  It can take awhile to get your UK license, so the sooner you start the process, the better.

I got an NHS 'card' by post after I got all my info to my GP, we were waiting on a bill with my name on it to show up. The mailed it to me pretty quick after that. Mine's a card shaped piece of paper that's laminated over the info, I keep it in my wallet in case I need it.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I think it depends where you live as to whether you get an actual NHS card in the post or not - some GPs send them out when you register with them and some don't (I had one sent to me when I registered at a new GP in Lincoln a few weeks ago, even though I was issued with my NHS number when I was born ... over 30 years ago).

Should chilli taste like a Christmas wreath?

I think maybe this gem was overlooked....

You see Ohioian chilli uses cinnamon and nutmeg and cloves and stuff...so I sort of compared it to something evocative of the aromas of Christmas...

We were just ignoring your obvious silliness. :P And it's not generally Ohioan, it's specifically Cincinnati. There are a handful of restaurants in other parts of Ohio, but that's relatively new. In Cincinnati they're everywhere; within a 10 minute drive of my mum's house there are 3.

Look I have no room to talk, it's true. I come from NW Florida. Our contribution to US cuisine is mullet dip. It's not a hair product.

thank you ksand24!!! Always very helpful I have registered with my gp. Now I have another question for you and hope to pick your brains a bit more. The bank here are asking me for a national insurance number and a tax code in order to add my name to my husband's account. My question is what is the tax code? Is it the same as the NI# or do I need to apply for another number? So clueless still they don't make it any easier

The tax code is separate - it's your personal allowance for the year and is assigned to you by HMRC to determine how much money you can earn in a financial year before you are taxed on it.

It changes every financial year, because the personal allowance usually increases each year, and it consists of 3 or 4 numbers and a letter.

The code that most people born after April 5th 1938 with one job will be on for the 2015/16 financial year will be 1060L. The numbers mean that they can earn up to £10,600 before they have to start paying tax on their income and the letter 'L' means they are entitled to the basic personal allowance. Other letters will refer to other situations (i.e. M and N are marriage allowances, Y is for people born before April 5th 1938, etc.).

If you are working in the UK, your tax code will be listed on your payslips. If not, you should be able to contact HMRC to find out what your tax code is.

thanks I am looking into how to get it. I am not currently working yet but I do wish to be added to my husbands bank account and the bank is requesting that as I don't have any utilities bills on my name. Never thought this process will be so difficult

Hey! Welcome to the area! I'm Michigan born living in Coventry now- not to far from you! There's a few of us Americans in the West Midlands who try to meet up when we are feeling homesick or need a vent about... Well, anything. Let me know if you need anything while you settle in. I've been here two years now and it's still a struggle, but it's always getting easier.
