Help finding correct term for jobs
« on: July 30, 2015, 03:49:32 PM »
I have been browsing jobs (dual citizen) in the UK, but have not come up with what I am looking for. I have a bachelor's of science in natural resource and wildlife management. When I search for conservation, it directs me to jobs that are conserving buildings rather than lands and animals. When I search for resource management, it is more of a human resources office type job. Does anyone have any advice for the words I may be looking for in the UK for this type of job?  ???

Thanks for the reply.
I had just googled those terms but as far as actual job listings (say on indeed or monster), it does not come up with loads of results. I was unsure if it was called something different in the UK versus the US and I just wasn't searching for the right information.
I wasn't entirely sure where to begin. Here I would look at the feds, department of conservation, or department of natural resources. I don't even know where to begin to look there. I also have experience in working with plants but any time I search nursery I get children's schools. Just a difference in wording I guess, but that is why I am having a hard time.

Also,

Thank you for the links! I will be looking into them. I have asked my family for help (all live in the UK) but they keep sending me farming jobs  :P

No problem - I think it's probably just a case of being more specific with what you're searching for.

Though it may also be that there aren't actually  all that many jobs available right now... I'm not sure what demand there is for environmental/conservation-related jobs in the UK though.

I also have experience in working with plants but any time I search nursery I get children's schools. Just a difference in wording I guess, but that is why I am having a hard time.

Yeah, in the UK, nursery is 'nursery school' (pre-school), so you'll probably get better results searching for 'plant nursery' or 'garden centre'.

Yes I was told by a friend who lives in the UK I may be better looking in Scotland as there is more untouched land there, which I am not opposed to either. Thanks for your help!

Here's the jobs page for the Forestry Commission... might be of some use?

http://www.forestry.gov.uk/vacancies

Also, you might try looking at individual local authorities.

The Forestry Commission is probably the largest environmental organization over here that is similar to the BLM, et al. It's a separate entity up in Scotland. There are hundreds of Forestry Commission location sites that are open to the public.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I'd look at Askham Bryan College, as one of the well-known land-based colleges in the UK and is the largest provider of specialist land-based further education in England.

http://www.askham-bryan.ac.uk/the-college

It should provide you with the terms and sources of employment for graduates. Higher Education = degree level work.

You could also try 'Types of jobs: Environment and agriculture':
