Travelling to Turkey on US Passport
« on: August 14, 2015, 11:36:42 AM »
Hey everyone,

My husband and I are heading to Turkey next month and I've received mixed messages about purchasing / needing a visa before travelling there. I'm an American with a US Passport and have my FLR here in the UK. Just wondering if anyone has travelled to Turkey after moving to England and what needs doing with regards to a visa.

Ta!

I went to Turkey in May 2013 on my US passport. I'm uncertain as to whether or not anything has changed since that time, but at the time I had to purchase the visa just before I got to the border in the airport. There was a desk right before I went through immigration. With my US passport, I had to pay $20 in US dollars. The woman stuck a sticker in my passport which was the tourist 'visa', valid for 90 days. Apparently for UK passports, it is £10, which has to be paid in pounds sterling. So in addition to getting money exchanged to Turkish Lira, I had to ensure that I had 20 USD as well for the trip.

Hope this helps!

We went to Turkey last year and got visas in advance.  We were advised that while it was still possible to get them upon landing, Turkey was starting to phase that process out, and it would save us time anyway.  We applied online and printed them out at home once approved.  It was great - we didn't have to queue once we landed (and the queue at the time was substantial); we were able to go straight to immigration with our printouts and breeze through.

Just make sure that you use a legit site to purchase the visas, ie the eVisa site mentioned in the link KFdancer posted.  I recently helped a British couple purchase their Turkish visas at the library.  Their travel agency had given them a site that charged them almost twice the price of the actual visa!  It should only be between $20-25.
